The all got more than 4 years, but this 4 years is in addition to the 2 years he’s already signed for. So the Mariners are committing to him for the next 6 seasons. What more can you ask?

To me, the possible upside of waiting and getting a contract through, say, 2020 at a slightly higher rate, might get him $60M more, minus whatever he’d be able to sign for the 2019-20 seasons if he took the extension. So he might gain $20M on the upside.

The downside is, he could get hurt and never see big money again, so it might coast him $80M if he passes on the Mariners offer. So the downside is worse than the upside is good.

I don’t know, a 4 year extension at $100MM that wouldn’t begin until two years from now, during which time he’ll make $41MM, doesn’t sound too bad. A hell of a lot can go wrong in two years for a pitcher with that many innings. And if everything goes fine, he’ll still be in his early thirties when he finishes that contract, leaving plenty of upside on the tail end of the extension. $100MM isn’t close to market value if he were a FA of course, but it’s a lot to turn down when you’re two years away from it even starting. Biggest reason not to take it I think would be if he doesn’t want to stay in Seattle.

wait. he wants them to go FURTHER out than 2018 on a contract? The history of MLB is littered with top 10 pitchers who blew out their arms (Brandon Webb, Jason Schmidt, Jake Peavy, Johan Santana come to mind as recent examples). The fact that they are willing to give him something pretty close to a fair market annual salary that far into the future is pretty generous to me.

Well it’s still 2 years before free agency, I’m thinking that if he has elbow/shoulder problems in 13 or 14, the money might not be the same when his contract expires.

Its not the offer its the years. He wants more years, since baseball contracts are fully guaranteed. If he takes this deal he will be 32 years old the next time hes a free agent. He is in his prime now, so he wants the longest term deal he can get.

I wish my talents were so good I could balk at 25,000,000 annually. But, they aren’t. In Felix’s case his free agency will be like when Peyton Manning was a free agent last year. Except more coveted since Manning had that neck injury and Felix is younger and plays baseball not football. 7 years: 210,000,000 could be the deal. Thats a “King’s Ransom”.

The only one that seems to have a good chance of hitting FA is Felix, and I think that is only if he doesn’t like the direction of the franchise. I rather doubt that Hernandez is concerned about the money/contract as much as he is about being on a competitive team. He has 2 years to see how the franchise evolves before making a decision.

The FA class of 2015 should be very, very interesting IF (and that’s a big if) these 3 pitchers don’t get signed by their current teams before then:

Clayton Kershaw – will be 27 years old to start the 2015 season
Felix Hernandez – will be 29 years old to start the 2015 season
Justin Verlander – will be 32 years old to start the 2015 season

Not so sure about that. The biggest difference is Verlander will be 32 years old for the start of the 2015 season when he is a FA. Hernandez will be 29 years old for the start of the 2015 season when he becomes a FA. That could make a pretty big difference in at the very least the amount of years each player is offered. the dollars on a per year basis should be very comparable.
