Watch Bob Costas’ eulogy of Stan Musial

Jan 26, 2013, 5:30 PM EST

Stan Musial’s funeral took place today.  The eulogy was given by Bob Costas, who Musial had specifically asked to speak.  He started out with one of the better Yogi Berra quotes you’ll ever hear:  “Always go to your friends’ funerals. Otherwise, they won’t come to yours.”  And the rest of it was excellent.

A fitting farewell for The Man:

    Great job by Costas.

This is why baseball remains the greatest game, despite the popularity of football. No other sports generates enough emotion to make grown men cry.

  2. richyballgame - Jan 26, 2013 at 5:54 PM

    A fitting good-bye to not only Bob’s friend,but Baseball’s friend… R.I.P. Stan “The Man” Musial.

  3. mybrunoblog - Jan 26, 2013 at 6:54 PM

    Very well done by Costas.
Costas also eulogized Mickey Mantle back in 1995. I have a feeling that when Yogi and Whitey someday pass, Costas will get those assignments too.

    • tuberippin - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I’m going to start putting money into a fund to get Bob Costas to do a eulogy at my funeral as well.

    • skids003 - Jan 28, 2013 at 7:52 AM

Good job by Costas. When he sticks with stuff he knows about, he’s good. When he does what he did on MNF, he’s not.

  4. jimatkins - Jan 26, 2013 at 8:28 PM

My admiration for Bob Costas now knows no bounds. This is truly eloquent.

  5. ptfu - Jan 26, 2013 at 9:01 PM

It got real dusty in here. Thank you Bob Costas for your thoughtful heartfelt words.

What a touching and beautiful tribute. Well-done, Mr. Costas.

What Cubs Fan keeps downvoting these posts?

with all due respect to Stan…Costas needs to be the one dead and not Stan.Costas is nothing more then a Pampas prick who everytime i see his face makes me wanna kick him in the throat .How he gets so much air time is beyond me and i will never understand it

    • kalinedrive - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:13 AM

I bet there are many things you will never understand.

    • phillies1phan - Jan 27, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Whether you like Bob Costas or not, and it looks like you don’t, i think that this
is not the time to put in such a stupid message. This is about Stan Musial and
should be only about Stan. If you have a problem with Bob Costas then send
him an email stating how much you dislike him. Just leave this kind of comment
      out of this eulogy.

Sorry you feel this way. Apparently you are not a fan of intelligent, eloquent, gracious baseball fans. As for your showing all due respect to Stan Musial, you didn’t the very second you started your diatribe against Bob Costas. But you know what? I’m sure that Mr Musial wouldn’t have minded and I bet Mr Costas doesn’t mind because they are better & more gracious individuals than most human beings will ever be. Including you! And probably me. I don’t agree with everything that Bob Costas says or thinks, but I give thanks every day that we live in a land where people can speak their minds. Instead of trying to insult him, please have some constructive criticism, but do it somewhere else. We seem to have lost our focus on what the US Constitution actually stands for–Guaranted Freedom & Tolerance of opposing views. A Constitution that Stan Musial helped to defend in 1945 along with millions of other folks including 7 of my Aunts and Uncles. Myself, I put in 20 years with the USAF to honor that Constitution and the Declatation of Independence, partially to honor all my relattives who fought in WWII in Europe, the Pacific, and elsewhere. Especially one of my uncles who didn’t come home from 1943 North Africa and who I never met. Politics don’t belong at a site set up for funeral comments. Next time please leave your politics at home or post them somewhere else so that people who may agree with you can read them. Your comments certainly don’t belong here at this date and time! RIP Stan Musial and condolences to his family, the Cardinals and their fans. Vaya Con Dios Mi Amigo

      Let me guess: Republican?

      • spellingcops - Jan 27, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Let me guess: brain dead? Leave the politics bull shit out of sports stories. Especially one this good.

      • aceshigh11 - Jan 27, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Why else would someone have a seething, unhinged hatred for Costas, if not for his political views?

If the idiot who posted the original message hadn’t run his mouth, I wouldn’t have asked the question.

    • manolibre48 - Jan 28, 2013 at 1:25 AM

I think the word you intended to use is the English word ‘pompous’. As you are obviously a well educated, articulate individual, I’m sure you realize that ‘Pampas’ actually refers to the savannas of Argentina. Either that, or you are a mean-spirited ass who should be denied his right to free speech since it is obvious you don’t understand what a privilege it is, as demonstrated by your abuse of it. “With all due respect to Stan”???? Really? What part of your stupidity reflects respect to anyone?

  9. 6stn - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:00 AM

A very moving eulogy for a wonderful human being. Pampas prick? Is that an Argentinian cowboy phrase?

    • paperlions - Jan 27, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Very well could be, the pampas is known for its thorny vegetation.

    • bigdicktater - Jan 28, 2013 at 8:44 AM

“Pampas prick” would be Mark Sanford, former Governor of SC who went AWOL, famously chasing some Argentinian tail.

  10. latchbeam - Jan 27, 2013 at 3:30 AM

    Stan was an amazing person!

  11. louhudson23 - Jan 27, 2013 at 6:53 AM

A truly tremendous man and a great, great ballplayer. They would have to make him an owner to sign him in today’s game.He achieved all that any of us can aspire to,that of a life well lived.Stan truly was “The Man”.

This video is long. But it’s worth every second to watch it. Bob Costas gave a tremendous eulogy to Stan Musial yesterday in St. Louis. I don’t know if anyone could every say anything better than this about Stan the Man

“What Cubs Fan keeps downvoting these posts?”

I am a Cub fan and I loved Stan as most Cubs fan do…I think Bob Costas did a GREAT job.
At a great moment like we just watched…why put in negitive thoughts. I have NEVER heard ONE Cub fan say ONE bad thing about Stan. I am 72 years old…and have watched many of Cubs game playing the Cards,,,,,back then ALL Cub game were on TV…so when Stan stepped up to the plate….you knew it was not going to be good for the Cubs….
