Albert Pujols is in The Best Shape of His Life

Jan 29, 2013, 6:18 AM EDT

Well, “in years,” but I think the “wedge” part makes this qualify:

Pujols is an all-time great already, but given his slow start last year — and slow finish, followed by October knee surgery — he may need to be kicking things up a notch conditioning-wise in order to combat the march of time.

  1. illcomm - Jan 29, 2013 at 6:27 AM

no valodity to any of your writing. Albert might be I’m better shape than last year, but not his once again stupid.

    • Craig Calcaterra - Jan 29, 2013 at 6:33 AM

Said a guy with a hotmail email address.

      • 2077james - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:40 AM

Said a guy using the made up word ‘valodity’

      • southofheaven81 - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:47 AM

Burn, but don’t feed the trolls.

      • silversun60 - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Craig, that might be the best burn ever. You, sir, win.

      • Francisco (FC) - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Man, once upon a time, having a hotmail address used to be trendy and respectable, circa 1997 more or less..

      • cosanostra71 - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:14 AM

What’s wrong with a Hotmail email address?

      • beefytrout - Jan 29, 2013 at 12:58 PM

        I miss my Geocities webpage.

      • steelpenbucs87 - Jan 29, 2013 at 1:40 PM

As of this posting 15 people have hotmail email addresses.

      • mntreehugger - Jan 29, 2013 at 2:39 PM

I have a friend with an excite address. That’s rad.

    • darthicarus - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:14 AM

If you’re going to complain at least put together complete sentences with proper spelling…plus BSOHL is Craig’s thing, let him have that at least.

    • lewp - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:53 AM

“Albert might be I’m better shape than last year, but not his once again stupid.”

What the hell? Might be I’M better shape? What the hell does that even mean?

You want to critisize someone for making a sentence that has been used for well over a year here that I know of? Are you just getting here to this country?

You sir, don’t even understand the joke that goes on with the statement. Oh, and think about putting your comments in Word, then use spell check, then cut and paste your comment here. We know you aren’t going anywhere, may as well type your stupidity correctly.

    • philsieg - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:04 AM

I wonder if you might provide subtitles with your next post. It would make it ever so much easier.

    • elpendejo59 - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:31 AM

If “illcomm” is short for “Ill Communication”, then it isn’t just a clever name…

    • okwhitefalcon - Jan 29, 2013 at 2:16 PM

      Criag – stop the bullying!!!

I sense a new PSA denouncing email address bullying is in production already.

  2. jerseypatriot76 - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:06 AM

Keep insulting the customers, Craig. It is quite a noble business plan. That is definitely the secret to getting more page views.

    • paperlions - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:15 AM

If you can’t take it, then don’t dish it out. If you can’t take a little ribbing in response to making a personal attack on the author, then you should probably just move along….besides, this guy has been making dumb comments that no one agrees with since the day he showed up….and he’s still here….he isn’t going anywhere.

    • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:07 AM

I resent your attempt to commodify my reading habits here.

  3. balfe13 - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:34 AM

    What the hell is “valodity”?

    • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:13 AM

      Volare…..oh oh…cantare….oh, oh, oh, oh….

      • heyblueyoustink - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:32 AM

Mock on Mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau?

      • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:35 AM

        Rock me, Amadeus.

  4. southofheaven81 - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:48 AM

So when do we start the official BSoHL tally?

    • Gamera the Brave - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:39 AM

That is kopy’s bailiwick, fear not…

  5. digbysellers - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:00 AM

Stop yelling, you’re ruining my birthday!

    • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:11 AM

      Happy Birthday!

  6. heyblueyoustink - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:13 AM

His contract is certainly in damn good shape. And illcom, dissent is always an interesting thing, but sometimes when you’ve had a couple of Mickey’s 40 ouncers first thing in the morning, you come across a little, um, unintelligable.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jan 29, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Have you read any of his(her?) other posts? This is a quantum leap in grammar/spelling for him (her?) compared to some previous stuff.

  7. illcomm - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:36 AM

you wear a hat often Craig. I’m sure your bald head gets pretty cold.

  8. illcomm - Jan 29, 2013 at 9:50 AM

elpend. illcomm is short for beastie boys.

  9. illcomm - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:03 AM

I do have a hotmail address, but its probably not the one that Craig thinks it is. everyone.e remember the days of aol and msn messenger. I still don’t get the diss on a hotmail email address. its as stupid as me making fun of Craig’s shiny scalp.

    • cintiphil - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:24 AM

      That’s telling him Ill:
By the way, I am in the best shape of my life also. I lost 1-1/2 lbs and my waist is down to 45″. I know, it is just a start, but I am getting there.

  10. kopy - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:19 AM

    • stlouis1baseball - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:24 AM

Hahaha! “2013 BSOHL Baseball Club.” Great stuff. And it’s a serious squad to boot!

    • cintiphil - Jan 29, 2013 at 11:06 AM

I think you should have nine guys on the list, just to make a whole team.

      • cintiphil - Jan 29, 2013 at 11:08 AM

How about a catcher. Maybe Laird? Or, someone who is in even better shape?

      • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 12:28 PM

Like every other catcher out there that can stand upright?

  11. stlouis1baseball - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:23 AM

I don’t necessarily get the hotmail diss either. But I damn sure laughed when I read it.

  12. stevequinn - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:42 AM

One thing about Albert, he’s not happy with last year. And when he’s not happy, watch out.

  13. Gamera the Brave - Jan 29, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Boy, remember the good old days when every store in the world had a box of free America Online install CD at the counter? And you got that “You’ve got mail” sounder? Remember how cool that was? In 1993?

Now, we are all so snobbish – if you have an email, you’re an anachronism, if you have Hotmail, you are just lame. If you don’t have a Gmail or .mac account, you ain’t cool. And you better post to Instagram!

Wait… I am being told that this is a Baseball blog… Sorry – Go Giants!

    • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 11:16 AM

      Ah, bourgeois humor.

      • Gamera the Brave - Jan 29, 2013 at 11:46 AM

You have correctly identified me with the middle class.

Unless, of course, you were referencing an alternate dictionary definition, such as (from Merriam-Webster):”marked by a concern for material interests and respectability and a tendency toward mediocrity”,
Which I would also agree that my observation above references, at least the first part…

Mostly, I rarely take even the most oblique poke at Craig, ’cause I like him, but while funny the Hotmail poke was a bit weak.
And not just because I have a Hotmail account (maybe…)

      • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 12:07 PM

That wasn’t meant for you personally and I have no problem w/ the poke at Craig there.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jan 29, 2013 at 2:32 PM

So you are telling me I have to get a Gmail account because all the cool kids have one?
What if I think Gmail sucks ass?
Besides…I have always been a leader…not a follower. But I may have to re-think this approach.
      I mean…if Gmail is where it’s at…it’s were it’s at.
In the grand scheme of things…a person’s email account is critically important.
This is ground breaking stuff here.
      Sign me up.

      • historiophiliac - Jan 29, 2013 at 3:38 PM

No, what really matters is how many email accounts you have.

      • Gamera the Brave - Jan 30, 2013 at 2:58 PM

historiophiliac is spot-on, it’s not the quality of the email account, it’s the sheer volume. If it ain’t unmanageable, it ain’t badass…

And yes, I have a gmail account, and yes, it kinda sucks ass…
stlouis, as much as I would like to point you in the direction of the new, cool email site, I can’t – I’m just too f*cking old to keep looking.

I may go back to AOL…

  14. fearlessleader - Jan 29, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Joe Strauss is using Twitter to needle Cardinal fans about what they’re missing out on by not having Pujols on the team anymore? I’m shocked! Shocked, I tell you! Next you’ll be telling me he’s slamming the town and the people that employ him as provincial and backward and/or being a smug know-it-all while swooning over his Chik-Fil-A sandwich!

Pujols wore a suit to the funeral and was never exactly Ponson-esque to begin with, so while I don’t doubt that he might be a “wedge,” I’m unclear on how, precisely, Joe’s sources were able to discern the nuances of his physique.

Meanwhile, at least one St. Louisan was spotted that day wearing a T-shirt that said “Well done, Stan—THAT’S how you sign with the Angels.”

    • zipsports - Jan 29, 2013 at 6:48 PM

Love that last line. It was kind of cool watching the Bob Costas eulogy. There were a few things Costas said that made me think “hear that Albert?”

You are exactly right about Strauss. He gets picked at on the 590 the fan morning show and basically admits tweeting just to stir things up. The joke with him all of the time that he isn’t happy unless he’s crabby.

  15. lewp - Jan 29, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Ok, I’m forced to bring out my secret e-mail account to verify my old AOL e-mail has gotten obsolete.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you

My new email address is in the best shape of it’s life!

Thank you, thank you very much.

  16. halohonk - Jan 29, 2013 at 5:53 PM

What a bunch of whiners. Lets face it, he is a 1st ballot hall of famer that still has a few killer yrs left in him. Coming off a sub par yr that saw him go for 290/30/100 and thats with 1 bomb in April, no protection in the line up the 2nd half & playing on 1 wheel the last part of the season. Hes in great shape has Hamilton hittin behind him and his team has the deepest pitching staff in baseball. He may not be mvp this yr but i betcha he and Hamilton are both in the top 5 mvp. Angels ride him all the way to the series.

    • cintiphil - Jan 29, 2013 at 7:38 PM

Albert was my favorite player of all time. I still like the guy, but keep in mind that every year his numbers go lower and lower. Each season there is some excuse for the slow start or poor finish etc.. I think Sir Albert is on the downside of is career and anyone who doesn’t think so is just fooling themselves. Lets see if this season brings about different numbers. If his numbers are not as good as last year, he is finished. If he somehow comes back to the numbers he had in St. Lou, then you could be right, but don’t hold your breath.
