Angels hire Omar Vizquel as roving infield instructor

Omar Vizquel retired as a player after 24 seasons in the majors, but he’s not taking any time off from working in baseball.

Alden Gonzalez of reports that the Angels have hired Vizquel as their new roving infield instructor, which is a job that was previously held by Dick Schofield. He’ll be part of spring training and then spend the season coaching prospects at every minor league affiliate.

Vizquel has said that his goal is to be a big-league manager and his first coaching gig comes via his former Indians teammate Jerry Dipoto, who’s now the Angels’ general manager. Another former Indians teammate, Paul Sorrento, is the Angels’ roving hitting instructor and put in a good word for Vizquel to get the gig.

I thought that he wanted to start at the top and be considered for a managerial job this season.

The way he said it in interviews he was looking for coaching jobs first. He eventually wants to get there. I think he was looking for a bench coach position during the Winter League.

Well the Angels might be one more massive underachievement of a season away from that managers spot being open to him.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Vizquel comes out of retirement to be a September call-up if the Angels find themselves short on middle infielders.

It’s pretty sad that a guy who has a shot at being in the HOF has to get a word put in for him from Paul Freakin Sorrento. Sheesh!
