Have you taken a look at the talent in this year’s draft? Baseball fans have been spoiled the past few years with some pretty good players coming from the amateur draft & making waves in the majors very quickly. This year, that’s not going to be the case; maybe with the exception of Mark Appel. After Appel & the P from Indiana State, the next 12-15 best available are all HS kids. Gauging the ability of a college first rounder is hard enough; predicting a HS first rounder is an absolute crap-shoot. Having the 11th pick this year is comparable to having an early second round pick in average depth draft classes. Baseball draft picks don’t hold the same weight as do football draft picks because unlike the high success & immediate-impact expectancy of NFL first rounders, baseball is lucky to have 10% of their first round picks make the major team & be an everyday starter. The Mets have ZERO talent in the OF on the big team & even LESS on the farm, so signing Borne will not be a stop-gap move (especially since next year’s free agent OF class is worse that this year’s deplorable class has been). Borne on the Mets from 30-35 years old is better than any option they have & is better than hoping a player from the weakest draft class in decades will even make the big team in the next 10 years. Bottom line: Suring up CF from 2013-2016/17 is a more attractive long-term option than keeping, hoping & praying the 11th pick pans out.

Maybe not “dreaming”, but I would love Bourn in centerfield. He fills two major needs: lead-off and centerfield. However, not at the expense of the 11th pick.

Not quite what anyone would be hoping for. Just to get in a related comment for the 50 game suspension comment: If that stat line is the product of a user it certainly proves how they help a players game. To me it shows that you still have to have a skill set and ability to put up numbers…so maybe these substances do not inflate stats with such certainty as some folks would like to believe.

Right now the outfield looks like Duda/Cowgill/Capt’n Kirk/Bixler/Baxter. Byrd might end up getting 400 ABs with the Mets.
