The Mets are pursuing Jose Valverde

Adam Rubin reports that the Mets may not be too confident with Frank Francisco as their closer and thus may be pursuing … Papa Grande:

Sandy Alderson, who expressed serious concern with Frank Francisco as his closer, is trying to remedy the situation.  Alderson is pursuing Jose Valverde to compete — or more likely unseat — Francisco as closer, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Unless the money is minuscule I can’t see why they’d bother. Maybe hoping he puts a good first half up, everyone forgets how unreliable he was late last season and then tries to trade for him at the deadline? Eh, I guess there are worse ideas.

Worse ideas? How about the other story that they are also considering K-Rod?

If they have serious concern about Francisco then by all means put Valverde in…that’ll be entertaining for everyone but Mets fans.

I agree with Craig. I can’t see him being cheap enough to fit in with the Mets “throw a lot of relievers at the wall and see which one stick” strategy. Unless maybe it’s a cheap deal with a lot of incentives?

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Alderson isn’t interested in breaking the bank for Papa Grande and Rubin speculates it would be on the team’s terms with incentives.

Papa Grande translates into Big Potato.

    “Alderson is pursuing Jose Valverde….”

Alderson shouldn’t have to run to fast to catch him, unless we start getting report that Papa Grande is in the BSOHL.

Why waste money on a closer when they don’t have anyone to produce runs to get a lead into the 9th. They are going to be terrible offense first then worry about closing the game

      Worry about your geriatric wonders.
