Giants claim Tony Abreu off waivers from Royals

San Francisco picked up a potential backup infielder by claiming Tony Abreu off waivers from Kansas City today.

Abreu spent most of last season at Triple-A, but got into 22 games for the Royals and has 464 career plate appearances in the majors, hitting .252 with a .635 OPS.

Even for a utility infielder that isn’t much production, but the 28-year-old switch-hitter has done some nice work in the minors, batting .324 in 355 games at Triple-A to suggest he might be capable of more offensively.

You know, whenever I’ve heard that term “waivers,” I’ve always thought of cillia – those little waving hairlike structures in our lungs and throat. I imagine them slowly lifting disenfranchised ballplayers who have become useless and transporting them up and away from the organization proper, until they can be expelled into the free market like an accidentally inhaled coconut flake.

    Ah, the joys of freeassociation.

Had a nurse friend once, we wrote a song together about lung cilia…
(to the tune of the “Rawhide” theme)
      Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’,
      Sheets of mucus rollin’,
      Sheets of mucus rollin’,
      Rhonchi!

      etc…
It’s possible that we were inebriated when this song was written. Apparently bored as well…

At 2nd he is below average defensively, at 3rd or SS he is a disaster. Must be AAA depth for the Giants.
