Phillies, Nats fans apparently care what Ken Rosenthal’s Twitter avatar is

Feb 4, 2013, 10:30 AM EDT

Rosenthal bow tie

Ken Rosenthal’s Twitter avatar used to be a picture of him with the Phillie Phanatic. He made that his avatar over a year ago after a bunch of Philly fans gave him crap for being (mildly at best) critical of the Phillies and their fans.

Over the weekend some Nationals fan asked Rosenthal to consider changing his avatar to something Nats-related. Which he did. It’s a pic of Rosenthal photoshopped into a racing presidents picture. As demonstrated over at the Let Teddy Win blog, this set off Phillies fans. And it set them off in predictable fashion.

People ask me why I needle Phillies and, increasingly, Nats fans so often.  The fact that both camps have people who care what a baseball writer’s Twitter avatar is a big reason why.

And yes, I realize that approximately 60% of the comments to this post will be “well, at least we care about our team! You Braves fans wharglebarglebarglebllaaaahrrrghh!!!”

Is that what they are, the three hundred people that show up to Braves Home games, fans?

I always thought they were wayward carnies.

Dumbest. Story. Ever. Those tweets from whining Phillies fans to Rosenthal are an embarrassment to me.

Well, at least we care about our team! You Braves fans wharglebarglebarglebllaaaahrrrghh!!!

  4. nategearhart - Feb 4, 2013 at 10:37 AM

I thought the comments would be along the lines of demanding that if you mention anything bad about the Phillies fanbase, you then have to say something bad about all the other teams’ fanbases.

At least us Phillies fans know who we are. Craig claims he is never bias when it comes to the on field play of the Braves. But he still hasn’t mentioned in a story that Michael Bourn, Chipper Jones, and Martin Prado had a higher combined fWar and War in 2012 then Justin Upton, B.J. Upton, and Chris Johnson. Where is the story questioning if the Braves are actually better after these moves in 2013 then they were in 2012? You had no problem pointing out that the Mariners didnt really get any better after their trade but you do have a problem doing it with the Braves. But your never bias bc you have called out Fredi Gonzalez a few teams.

So start a blog and write it.

Why the hell is Chipper Jones in there? Did the Braves decide to force Chipper to retire? Are they sending him upstate to play with rabbits (Colbert)? Also, good use on one year of WAR to determine a player’s ability.

      • alang3131982 - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:27 AM

Also….how would the Braves get Bourn back? They may have jumped too soon on Upton, but he is younger and one can think the Trop limits him offensively. Also, Chris Johnson does suck and Prado is good, but Johnson/Justin Upton will be around a lot longer than Prado…

Oh look another article by Craig trolling the Nats! Is that 4 this year already?

    • natstowngreg - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:03 PM

You weren’t around during the Great Strasburg Shutdown Debate, were you?

      • goodellisruiningtheleague - Feb 4, 2013 at 9:19 PM

        Yessir I was

  7. jmcguirefm - Feb 4, 2013 at 10:57 AM

The only thing dumber than caring about Ken Rosenthal’s Twitter avatar is writing a post about it on national sports site.

  8. hisgirlgotburrelled - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Did you actually read the comments? They were very tame. One comment had a smiling emoticon.

  9. pkswally024 - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:10 AM

    Keep trolling for hits

    • Utley's Hair - Feb 4, 2013 at 2:50 PM

      And you keep providing them.

  10. philsphilsphils - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Craig definitely subscribes to the quantity over quality when it comes to blogging.

  11. digbysellers - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:18 AM

This fella is one supafly, trolling, mama-jamma.

  12. historiophiliac - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:20 AM

I care that he’s wearing one of those stupid pink ribbons in that picture.

  13. sportsdrenched - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:20 AM

I see Craig working. It’s the day after the Super Bowl, baseball doesn’t stir for another week. So when things are this slow you have to go to the old stand by: Troll Phillie & Nats fanbases.

    I’m good with that.

    • psr179 - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Trolling Phillies fans is certainly an old stand by as they’ve been relevant. However, trolling Nats fans is a new found hobby because until last year, they didn’t have much to cheer for and were very quiet…no one even knew such thing as a Nats fan even existed until last season.

  14. chadjones27 - Feb 4, 2013 at 11:24 AM

I find it kind of amusing that Rosenthal pays attention and interacts with the fan bases. Makes him a more likable media-type. In this anonymous-on-the-internet world we’re becoming, it’s nice to see some personalization.

  15. joejaws75 - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:13 PM

No one in Philly cares what picture that dumbass. Has Maybe he should just have a picture of himself since he is supposed to be objective

    • Gobias Industries - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:23 PM

Putting a period in the middle of a sentence makes. It very difficult to figure out what you’re trying to say.

  16. mdpickles - Feb 4, 2013 at 12:27 PM

I’m guessing the only sellout in Atlanta this year will be the home opener. Meanwhile, the Phils/Nats games will be sellouts in DC in large part because of Phillies fans.

  17. paperlions - Feb 4, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Things Philly fans consider to be trolling of Philly fans:

    Any comment about the Phillies
Any comment not about the Phillies

I think that pretty much covers it.

  18. 12strikes - Feb 4, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Craig…. giving bloggers a bad name.

  19. irishphilly87 - Feb 4, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Nationals have fans? Oh i didn’t realize considering WE fill there park every year.

  20. orakpownd - Feb 4, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Nats fans….. took 7 years to win the East since inception.

  21. mancave001 - Feb 4, 2013 at 7:11 PM

    Shove it, Craig.
