This is somewhat interesting. He ceratinly loves pitching in St. Louis. Dude has treated the Cardinals like his personal whipping boy. It might be worth a look. You might also find Bud pitches with more consistancy when he has a solid lineup behind him.

The only reason Houston will get away with this is that they don’t receive revenue sharing. They actually pay in a sliver of their own revenue to the system, according to a recent Fangraphs article.

For their sake, I seriously hope they are using the money not spent on payroll for investing in the stadium, minor league development and paying down debt from their team purchase. This is ridiculous how much profit they’re likely making even on a hideous ballclub.

His slider moves so much he has a hard time controlling it sometimes… Nasty stuff but poor mental fabric… If a good pitching coach gets ahold of him you could be looking at breakout. Bargain waiting to happen

I think Luhnow is trying to rise to the challenge of a 120-loss season. This should about clinch it.

Question. Who does he think will want to go watch a AA team play in the AL West? Minute Maid will be a ghost town for two more years. They were not even playing at Replacement Level last year and they will have less talent on the MLB team this year.

To me, it is a question of resource management. If they trade for Norris, it’ll cost them something…they’ll be giving up prospects and paying him more than the guy he is replacing. The possible upgrade of Norris over Miller/Kelly/Rosenthal is tiny and he very well could be a downgrade. Why pay such a high price when the upside is minimal and possibly negative?

Lynn and Norris pitched about the same post-ASB last season, with Lynn a smidge better (ERA around 4.40 versus 4.60 with Norris). Miller obviously has some serious stuff and major upside. I don’t know much about Rosenthal.

Overall I think the peripherals of Bud Norris would come down closer to his 2011 levels if he was not stuck behind an a bad defense, and St. Louis has a pretty good defensive infield (although Matt Adams remains to be seen). For that reason I think he would make a good pick-up. At the worst, he ends up as someone who provides much better depth than Jake Westbrook does presently.

I doubt that they would trade him for a relative pittance. You will not be able to dump any of your unwanted relatives on the Astros.

As a Cardinal fan, I would prefer Lynn, Kelly, Miller, or Rosenthal to Norris. Both Lynn and Kelly were far better than Norris last year….and Rosenthal and Miller both have better stuff. Norris is fine, but the Cardinals already have a lot of depth and talent the position, no reason to add a below average starter to the rotation.

I’ve always felt that Bud Norris would be a great fit in St. Louis, and I’m surprised they have not jumped on him in trade talks previously. It seems like the stars might align for this to happen in the near future as well, with Carpenter’s career ostensibly coming to a close. Joe Kelly, Trevor Rosenthal, Lance Lynn and Shelby Miller all have upside, but a team like the Cardinals usually hedges their bets in such endeavors and picking up Bud Norris would be a sage move in that regard, IMO.

Considering the generally pithy returns the Astros have gotten on their veterans of late, the Redbirds could probably acquire Norris for a relative pittance too.

Uncanny how many times Bud would throw 4 or 5 scoreless, and have 1 ugly inning. I believe a lot of that had to do with knowing he had to be perfect to win in Houston.

K per inning, and would make a team like Anaheim really good. Just in case he still has 1 bad inning per game. Halos can cover him on that. Halos need another arm.

He will have a breakout year if he leaves Houston.
