Cardinals closer Jason Motte‘s reaction on Twitter after hearing the bad news about Chris Carpenter sums things up pretty well:

Carpenter was a good pitcher, but as a person was a first class a-hole!

      he’s not dead ya know…

You know Chris Carpenter? Rhetorical question: You must know him.
      I mean…
Otherwise your statement is based upon what you perceive him to be while watching a game.
Which…you know…is probably not a good reflection of a person as a whole.
In fact, to make such a statement without having anything else to base it on is irresponsible.
      Anywho…
Since you obviously know him please ask him if he would consider working with the young pitchers in the organization.

you see some body 162 days year you can get pretty good idea of their character

You would have loved him if he played for your team.

more just kind of a d-bag the a-hole part you see is the competitor in him

“you see some body 162 days year you can get pretty good idea of their character”

You saw Carp 162 days a year? I bet you were floored by his work ethic huh?
He starts what…(30 – 35) games and yet you saw him 162 days?
You must have an all inclusive pass in the clubhouse. How cool is that?
I am definately jealous. Much like you are.

Motte’s tweet sums up my feeling.

This news has to really get the juices pumping for guys fighting for a rotation spot though. Coming into ST, it was generally assumed that Waino, Garcia, Carpenter, and Westbrook would be “given” spots in the rotation and that Lynn would have to out-compete Miller, Rosenthal, and Kelly to keep it…..now, at least 2 of those guys will get spots….and really, it wouldn’t be surprising if the 6th and 7th best starters StL has in ST are Westbrook and Garcia, respectively.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. I am sure none of the young guys wanted to see Carp go down, but they are competitors and the minute they heard the news, you know it had to fire them up. This is going to be a fun Spring Training in the Redbird camp.

Another fine example of the truism that brevity is the soul of wit.

Maybe this had nothing to do with Carpenter and everything about him having to poop.
