The Cards can afford Wainwright just fine (now) – he only becomes “too expensive” once he hits free agency.

As far holding off then dealing him if negotiations stall for whatever reason, that’s not going to happen. When was the last time the Cards were “sellers” at a deadline?

Mo has also stated if an extension isn’t done before the end of spring it’s unlikely they’d negotiate in season.

The Cards are smart enough to realize who’s got the hammer in this scenario and both know Waino’s got more inherent value now that Carp’s done.

I suspect this will play out much like the Molina situation did last spring, alot of hyperventilating then a collective sigh of relief.

Get this down now. If they hope to save any money…they get it done now.
Waiting will just drive up the price when everyone else get in the mix when the season is over.
No different than our former 1st Baseman. This will be his 2nd year after TJ. I look for him to return to his previous studliness.

For those numbers I would think it would ake more sense to wait and see how the season starts……If he is really back 100% and winds up being too expensive they could always trade him before the deadline and least get a good prospect or two. The cards dont have LA/Yankee/Bosox budget where they can afford to make a 100 Million dollar mistake nad just shruf it off –they have to be careful and smart.

id probably wait till after the season he had a down year after surgery hope my cardinals play it right
