It seems like everyone missed the point. I don't think the article was about Felix being unavailable, I think it was about the size of his contract, which can have the effect of increasing salary demands for other pitchers down the line. See the sidebar "Felix's mega-deal with M's adds to Yankees' offseason misery."

Craig admits he didn't read the article, but did anyone?

Couldn't agree with you more. Since King Felix came up, Yankee fans have been concocting these ridiculous Cervelli for Felix trade rumors. To Yankee fans, the Yanks can get who they want & can get out of any contract they want, simply because they're the Yankees (see the voiding of A-Rod's contract).
"So the circle of life is going spin back towards the leaner times. '

The last "lean" season as 2008 and the result was the Yankees jumped feet first into the FA market and it resulted in a WS win. If the oatmeal hits the fan I see the Yankees doing what it takes to be competitive immediately. One poor season would likely be all it takes. Of course that's assuming that there are FA available that fit the Yankees needs.

The last couple of seasons the Yankee have made no major moves because there wasn't a big time FA that the Yankees had to have, .. some major hole that could be filled with a certain player. Cliff Lee was that type of player and yes the lost out on him. On the other hand when they targeted Sabathia, a player that stated that he wanted to play in the NL and on the west coast, they made no bones about it. They initially out bid every other team by about 35 million dollars and when that didn't work they upped it buy another 25 mil or so.

The Yankee's lean years in the 60s was before free agency so that is not really a valid comparison any longer. The 80s, .. the Yankees won more games than any other team and appeared in the WS. Although the late 80s to early 90s was in fact tough times in NY. Just not enough quality pitching.

Bottom line is if the Yankees falter and the right FA are available the Yankees will likely do what it takes. With their resources nothing is out of their reach. While it's nice to build from within the Yankees have options. The only thing that seems to have changed is the Yankees have decided that the there is no reason to throw buckets of money at every position and have attempted instill fiscal discipline. But, I'd wager that there is great big room with a glass door and half a ton of $100 and on that door is stenciled "Break In Case Of Emergency". I don't see too much lean in the Yankees future.

I think the Joel Sherman observation is perfectly legitimate. I often look ahead at my team's future, including whose contracts are ending soon. If you're a Red Sox fan like me, it's reasonable to wonder who will be playing centerfield in a couple years. Will it be Ellsbury? If not, who?

Do other fans not do this? I mean, I follow baseball for decades at a time. I appreciate that the players take it "one game at a time," but that doesn't mean I have to.

Right, because the Yankees' farm system was overflowing with grade-A prospects to deal for Felix.

Is it any wonder that non-Yankees fans view the Yankees' fan base as petulant 6-year-old children whining about the toys they want but can't have?

I actually hope Cano does go elsewhere just so the kicking and stomping grows louder.

The rebuild is coming. Current generation of Yankee fans might wake up and find themselves having more in common with the Yankee fans of the '60s and "80s than with the fans of the '50s,'90's and '00's. The '14 Yankees will be missing Rivera, Pettite, and most likely Kuroda. Other departures could include Hughes, Chamberlain, Granderson, AND Cano. '15 will see Jeter and Ichiro gone. The Yankees currently hold only 3 of the top 100 prospects. So the circle of life is going spin back towards the leaner times. This is when we find who are the fans...and who are the camp followers.

The rebuild is coming. Current generation of Yankee fans might wake up and find themselves having more in common with the Yankee fans of the ’60s and “80s than with the fans of the ’50s,’90′s and ’00′s. The ’14 Yankees will be missing Rivera, Pettite, and most likely Kuroda. Other departures could include Hughes, Chamberlain, Granderson, AND Cano. ’15 will see Jeter and Ichiro gone. The Yankees currently hold only 3 of the top 100 prospects. So the circle of life is going spin back towards the leaner times. This is when we find who are the fans…and who are the camp followers.

".. why would anyone begin to believe that the Yankees would have even been the favorite to sign Felix .."

Who said anything about signing King Felix, other than this sports writer? A writer that would clearly rather make things up about the Yankees than write anything of substance about them. Or, write anything at all about the Mets. I've been a Yankee fan for a long time and Yankee fans I talk to aren't beating a drum about Hernandez. In fact he's stated repeatedly that he doesn't want to pitch for the Yankees and the word on the bridge of the Death Star is that they can get along just fine without him.

Any baseball fan would like to have Hernandez in their team's rotation but he's never seriously been on the Yankee's radar. This is just a local writer running out of topics as the off season comes to an end.

Not lumping all, but certainly most. If it was 2008 or 2009 I would certainly expect the Yankees to have been up front for him. But this is 2013. Other teams are much more competitive for FA than before. Right now the A-rod contract is doing for NYY what the previous one was doing for the Rangers. Notice how the Rangers became competitive once that 25 million a year load was off their back? And as far as being on the radar for a long time...Cliff Lee was on the radar for a long time...and where is he now?

"Wow, this makes it real easy to see why people hate New York and Yankee fans"

Come on! don't bunch all of us together because of one jackass reporter.

"With the way things have been going now for the last three years or so, why would anyone begin to believe that the Yankees would have even been the favorite to sign Felix if he had made it to Free Agency. "

Do you truly believe that had Felix made it to FA the Yanks would not have up in front of it? Given how little they have spent last/this off season it was all but guaranteed that they would have tried to break the bank for him, Maybe not $25 million per but at the very least the same exact contract as CC.

And the fact is that EVERYONE out there Yankees fan or not knows that he has been on the Radar for years so this happening puts a damper on what could have been,

Agreed. The likelyhood of Cano resigning with NYY are not real good imho. I can't help thinking that the most interesting headline will be the one in July when he gets traded for prospects.
