Let’s walk through this logically for a moment. Let’s consider NFL ticket prices and D-I college football prices. I live near Chicago and I know the numbers off the top of my head, so let’s compare Bears ticket prices with Notre Dame ticket prices. The Bears pay their players, on average, a little more than $2M. Notre Dame pays their players $55k (tuition, fees, room, and board). They play in similarly sized venues. The Bears have a larger population area to draw on. Obviously, Bears tickets should cost more. They don’t. They cost less, despite paying their players 40 times as much as Notre Dame does. Player costs do not drive ticket prices.

No. There are dozens of baseball agents. Many of them are considered “high powered,” Boras is just one of them. He’s the most outspoken, so he gets the most negative press. If these agents colluded and formed an effective monopoly then they might be able to wield that kind of power. Then MLB would hit them with an anti-trust suit, which would be ironic.

Agreed. I think in many cases he doesn’t screw over anyone and a signing happens nearly invisibly. You mostly hear about the “bad” ones, but the ability to do “bad” is exactly why certain players hire him. There’s a market for this and it was created by players who want “most”. Curse him or not, he doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

Ytown–i don’t really blame the player or the agent for how high player salaries are. It’s the owners who listen to the spiel and offer those contracts. It’s the corporate sponsors who buy luxury suites and the premium box seats. It’s the TV companies that buy the broadcast rights. Fans buy tickets and everybody pays cable bills.

A lot of people don’t like Boras and are not fans of his. I’m not. But, if I was a player with some decent talent, I’d probably be happy to have him represent me. Whatever anyone thinks of the guy, he is very effective at his job. He is more than willing to play the role of bad guy, so the players can get their money and still not be seen as the bad guy. In most cases, everyone curses Boras far more than his clients, which is likely what his clients want.
