I’m a fan of Cano but the best thing to do is let him walk. He won’t age well and then your stuck with another A-rod deal. Jesus no there are other infielders you can try and get later on.

Cano will have a “contract” year, the Yankees will then be forced to sign him at whatever it takes for 6 years and, then, he’ll start to break down. You can take that to the bank!

Don’t count on this so called talk amounting to anything. Cano/Boras have already stated they have no intention of giving the Yankees a hometown discount. And if that is indeed the case there is absolutely no incentive for the Yankees to give try and work out a deal with them before his current contract expires. In fact it makes more sense for them to wait and see what happens during the year. You know baseball is very funny that way.

Pick a second basemen that was not just good but great and see what their numbers look like at 33-34 years old (which would be half way through just a six year deal if Cano were to sign one).

Cano will likely be resigned and it WILL be expensive. Boras will complicate things but the Yankees have shown their hand if they truly began any preliminary talks. The Yankees do not negotiate with players under contact. If they’ve already started than that pretty much tells you all you need to know about how important they think he is in the Yankee future.

Cano’s bat will play at a corner position. Not sure if he’s really worth $20 million at a corner spot, and the Yankees have a lot of dollars already tied up at first and third over the next few years, but I’m less concerned about the 2B cliff with him.

Then again, the Yankees have a recent history of overpaying an aging middle infielder and they pretty much got away with it.

I bleed pinstripes but a 6 year deal would be crazy. Cano is awesome but look at the cautionary tale of Chase Utley. A nagging injury or two and all of a sudden you have the most expensive DL captain in the bigs.

Between the Boras connection and the explosion of new TV money, look for this to be a non-starter. If the NYY are serious about the 189 million luxury tax threshold, and want to have a shot at fielding a somewhat balanced competitive team they cannot bid very freely for his continued service. There is too much money tied up in A-rod, Tex and Sabathia. Retaining Cano will not be the only issue either. The NYY project to need 2 starters, a closer, and since it hasn’t really been addressed this year, catching and right handed of/dh help.
