Yep! I am talking about Jeff Mathis and John Buck. Mathis is much better behind the plate. The trade almost fell apart because the Marlins wanted both Buck and Mathis to be part of the trade. AA initially balked at that part of the deal. Fortunately, he was able to get the Mets to take Buck.

There is no way for a MLB owner to spend less than $30M on payroll and lose money. With the amount of revenue sharing that exists, every owner that doesn’t spend anything comes out ahead. There isn’t a single MLB team that doesn’t make money. McCourt made more money off the Dodgers during his rather short stint as owner than any MLB player has ever made.

The only thing that would get Loria’s attention is losing money. Regardless of poor attendance the Marlins will still make money. If he someday sells the team, that will be for a huge profit. When the attendance this year is pitiful, watch for a lot of pundits to blame the fans/fan apathy rather than laying blame where it belongs. No, sorry, all I see is marlins fans getting screwed.

For those demanding Selig step in, this may be the most telling retribution to Loria et. al. Ultimately the prospects the Marlins received MAY pan out, but I feel for the South Florida fans who cannot trust that any glimmers of hope are and will be in the future, fleeting.
