The Pirates are going to fan-source a new logo

Not a big fan of the Pirates logo. It’s very 1990s NBA. I’m shocked it doesn’t have some teal in it someplace. So good news for people like me:

Four focus groups — season ticket holders, corporate partners, suite holders and random fans — are meeting at PNC Park this week to help pick a new buccaneer symbol. The present model, shown here, features a snarling pirate in a black and red bandana. It has been around since 1997.

“It’s time to update it a little bit,” executive vice president and chief marketing director Lou DePaoli said.

I sort of like the old one, but that may be a bit too oldish. It’s kind of hard to make a cool logo when your mascot is a person. Either it’s too realistic looking or else you go all stylized with it which gets you into some weird territory.

They note that they are keeping the gold “P” as the primary symbol of the organization. Maybe just emphasize it even more and slap it on stuff on which the pirate logo currently appears? I dunno.

You’re exactly right about the pirates looking 90s nba. This coming from the former owner of a Vancouver Grizzlies Starter jacket.

Maybe go back to the old one only make him look like Viggo Mortensen instead of Jack Palance.

I always see James Garner at a Halloween party in the Hollywood Hills circa 1974.

I’m a Reds fan, so I don’t have much skin in the game, but this is great for the Pirates; I really like the gold “P”, but that logo is awful.

If they could get a consistently decent team on the field they could do so much better. The stadium is awesome, they have a great downtown and bar district, great history/tradition. Ugh, it could be so good.

When your biggest star is Andrew McCutchen, your logo needs some dreadlocks. Go with the Johnny & Keith pirate look.

There is zero chance that the Pirates won’t get hundred of Pirates of the Caribbean-influenced logos.

I’m a Pittsburgh fan, the logo is awful! The “P” iconic and that has to stay. A skull with 2 crossed bats under it would be cool and not look like the clown they have now.

The “P” absolutely stays, maybe with the basball’s threads woven through it, something to update it but show the strong tradition…Go Buccos,,,from an old fan living in So. Fla.

At least its not this swashbuckler (and on that note, what the hell is a swash and why do i need someone to buckle it?)…

Good job by the Pirates getting fans involved. I wish more teams would do this.

Can’t wait till this goes horribly awry.

This should have been done years ago.

Focus Group Leader: Folks, I can not say this enough, if Disney has already Trademarked it, we can not use it!

As a Pirate with one eye I’m deeply offended by the pirates hat, if they force the NFL redskins to change their name they should make the pirates change logos.

I am partial to the Dustin Hoffman look in the 1991 movie “Hook”. That would be a fun image for the Pirates

My university had the nickname Warriors. In order to be more politically correct, they transitioned their mascot from a Native American soldier to an unspecified Spartan/Trojan/Roman figure.

What I’m saying is, the new Pirate mascot should be a hipster kid with a fedora and thick-framed glasses illegally downloading a Bon Iver album.

There is really only one way to go with this. Michael Bolton as Jack Sparrow

Very glad to hear they aren’t screwing around with the P.

#1 priority should be eliminating red from the color scheme. Pittsburgh is black and yellow. No need for an odd accent pop color.

My thoughts exactly. Black and gold, winning colors.

I remember when Hayden Fry took over as the head football coach at the University of Iowa c. 1979 and immediately forced a change of the school colors from red-and-white to black-and-gold. Someone asked him, “Why get rid of red and white?”, and he said, “Because you’ve lost for years with those colors”, and “Why black and gold?”, to which he said, “Winners’ colors”.

Some bad news for you, Craig:

    My condolences.

Not only should they change the logo, but they might as well change the players too!!

  19. avietar - Feb 12, 2013 at 12:40 PM

They should just change the name of the team to Pirates of the Alleghany.
