Of course they could afford him….but being able to pay someone and it being a good idea to do so are two completely different things. Offering a $100M+ to a 32 yr old pitcher is nearly always a bad idea. The Cardinals are lucky as hell that Pujols turned them down (they got more production out of 1B last year than the Angels did). I would love to see them keep Wainwright, but if he wants about $25M per for 5 or more year, that isn’t reasonable.

They offered Albert 210 mil yea but he never had tj surgery either. Cant see giving him a long term deal due to the fact he was cut on.

The Cards can afford him just fine, they just may not choose to pay him.

Again, they’re not some middling franchise that can’t afford to keep the players they deem worth keeping.

Paper–As I mentioned we have seen in the past that there are teams that will pay it but that in my opinion has most to do with unlimited funds that allow managemnt to simply disregard basic logic for the sake of ego gratification or whatever. The dollars simply dont matter but he Cards aare not one of those teams. I have mentioned on here before that I dont think the situation is good for the game in general and will possiby change when the big spenders are perceived by the public as fools-like the Yanks/Arod and others.
In the meantime it’s still feels satisfying to see teams like the cards do a pretty good jon the old fashioned way. It makes it that much sweeter to see them get to the post season while certain big spenders sit home and wonder what went wrong

For a pitcher his age, that would just not be a good deal….but someone may give it to him.

It seems like the gap is indeed wide, 5/100 million isn’t going to get it done unfortunately.

“North of 5/110″ is where the speculation is centering so who the hell knows really.

If it comes to 20 plus million/year he may be worth that to teams with $$ to squander but not to the Cards—They have to be smart to compete–The playing field is not even–even at 110M payroll do they really want to put 20% into a pitcher in his 30s, as fond of him as we may be —LA/Yanks could just blow off an injury and get someone else—it could cripple the cards.
Depending on how it goes they could possibly trade for one or more good prospects….

Nah, it is actually that what each side is thinking are in completely different zip codes, area codes, states, regions, and possibly continents. After a preliminary discussion both sides decided there was no reason to continue at this point. Both seem to want to wait to see how Wainwright does in his 2nd year after TJ surgery.
