Cubs “leaning toward” using Carlos Villanueva as reliever

When the Cubs signed Carlos Villanueva to a two-year, $10 million deal in December it was assumed that he’d be in the starting rotation, but now Carrie Muskat of writes that they “seem to be leaning toward using Villanueva out of the bullpen.”

Villanueva said all the right things about filling whatever role is asked of him, but did tell Muskat: “I’m a starter and I’ve always seen myself as a starter.”

Matt Garza, Edwin Jackson, Jeff Samardzija, and Scott Feldman are locked in as starters, so Villanueva’s chances of joining them in the rotation depend mostly on Scott Baker‘s recovery from elbow surgery and partly on how impressive Travis Wood looks in camp.

Formidable lineup. They have actually done a great job making this pitching staff a lot better. We will actually compete again.

Best of luck Carlos. I’m sorry you have to play for the Cubs !!!

SO clever….I see those comedy classes you’re taking at Second City are really paying off. A joke about the Cubs, imagine that? Your parents must be SO proud. Bravo!

Hopefully they bring back the 120 inning RP.

So Carlos is basically right back where he was with the Jays before he signed with the Cubs – not thrilled to be pitching out of the pen and now he’s on a weaker team. I wish it could have worked out better for the guy, as I always liked him. Makes you wonder what promises were made to him when he signed.
