Quote of the Day: Larry Lucchino calls the Red Sox “scrappy underdogs”

Feb 15, 2013, 12:30 PM EDT

Larry Lucchino

Red Sox president Larry Lucchino was at Jet Blue Park yesterday. Money quote:

“I actually like being the underdog … We’re just scrappy underdogs trying to win for our franchise and for our fans.”

The Red Sox’ esimated payroll for 2013 is $162 million. As of last year they were the third most valuable franchise, had the second most in revenues and the second most in operating income.

But hey, it’s your team Larry. If you want to call the Sox “scrappy underdogs,” I’m not gonna stop you.

I hear the Diamondbacks are going to sue the Beanbags for copyright infringement. It seems like they had already copyrighted “scrap” along with “grit,” “particulate” and “irritant.”

Cool picture of Larry lugging around a garbage bag full of hundred dollar bills.

      LOL, nice.

Any team with a $150 million dollar payroll is hardly an underdog. Having a crappy season the year before and under performing doesn’t make you one either.

I think that he is saying that they are paying a lot of money to several dogs and expect them to fight in a scrappy manner to try to finish higher than 5th place in the division.

having $150 million tied up in crappy players makes you an underdog!

Underachieving and crappy. Fixed it for you, Larry.

Minus one S and I agree.

Good work these days Larry and the rest of the front office.

    Jonny Gomes MVP! WOOO!

  7. hitdog042 - Feb 15, 2013 at 5:03 PM

The payroll with all commitments is 180. Per the globe yesterday.

This is taken so far out of context it’s irresponsible. He said that making fun of his friend Paul Beeston in Toronto. He said if you think you are so good we will gladly play the role of the scrappy underdogs. He was joking.

So….he doesn’t actually realize how awful this season is going to be, and thinks the Sox are still in the mix?

That’s umm….that’s not really better. It’d be better if he realized the only change they have is to far exceed expectations….because, you know….they are very very very very very very very very very very very very low.
