Bad news this afternoon out of Brewers camp.

According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, first baseman Mat Gamel aggravated his surgically-repaired right knee Saturday during a workout.

Gamel told reporters recently that he has “good days and bad days” with the knee and Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash sent word to the media shortly after today’s incident that the team was “just being careful” in cutting Gamel’s workout short. But it’s pretty obvious that things are not going well.

Gamel was supposed to serve as the Brewers’ starting first baseman this season while Corey Hart recovers from January knee surgery. But Milwaukee might need another backup plan.

Gamel tore his ACL last May and hasn’t appeared in a game since.

I’ve been saying Hunter Morris at 1st base on these boards since Hart got hurt. Time for the prediction to become reality.

I agree Hunter Morris is the future, but no way in hell the Brewers start the clock on Morris this year.

I agree. To go with Morris would go completley against the way the Brewers have developed their past talent. Braun has been the only real exception to it but he was projected to be a lot better then than Morris is now.

But what’s the alternative? The free agent pool is down to Aubrey Huff and Carlos Lee. Blake Lalli, a C/1B, is in camp on an NRI. Does anybody else have 1B experience?

Bringing in a cheap FA is still better in my mind than rushing along a guy. Comes up to early and he loses confidence does the organization and player a disservice. Not to mention scouts say he still has obvious holes in his game such as a spotty fielder, terrible plate discipline, and needs to add some velocity to his swing. He also didn’t play that great in the Arizona Fall League this past fall which is where many teams send some of their better prospects. The guy is going to need time in Triple A most likely.

About a week ago Ron Roenicke said he was gonna ask recently resigned back SS Alex Gonzalez to play some 1B this season.

Maybe Alex Gonzalez is the answer at 1B for the Brewers until Corey Hart returns.

If Gonzalez plays some 1B that’s fine but lets not write off Gamel just because he has a sore knee right now. And lets not forget that Gonzalez wasn’t signed for his hitting.

Please Please Please, do not rush Corey Hart back. Make damn sure he is 100% healthy.
If the pitching is decent and this team has a chance this year, we need him on the field and at the plate on a regular basis especially down that stretch run through August and September.

Taylor Green would give a pint of blood out there on the field, but unfortunately
would feint at the sight. Other hand, we can probably be fairly sure he’s not juicing.

I just read that is was precautionary. he is fine according to Tom Hardracort (spelling).
