Give him a break, would any of you want to up and move after be planted in the same community for years. The Cubs signed him to that contract, he is doing them a favor by allowing a trade to the teams he would like to play for.

This guy is full of BS… In an article on MLB.com he adamantly stated that he wanted to win a World Series with the Cubbies and now he does a 360 and says all of this trade stuff?? Way to go Soriano, keep contradicting yourself in the media and nice way to endear yourself with Cubs fans…

If the Cubs are eating the contract, then there is no point in trading for nothing. Soriano is not a negative in the clubhouse, he worked hard to improve his fielding, 108 RBI’s, and there is no immediate replacement waiting to play. He has a history of when hot he can carry a team and the Cubs, whose pitching is not that bad, certainly needs a bat in the transistion period. He’s not worth the money he will be getting, but he is certainly is not one of the cases of paying to move a negative.

If the Cubs ate most of the contract, didn’t ask for too much back, and Soriano was willing to DH (at least the majority of the time), I bet there would easily be that many clubs interested. But, if the Cubs have to eat most of the contract and don’t get much in return, why trade him?

I’m pretty sure he’s reached the 10-5 stage of his career. Doesn’t matter if the Cubs gave him a no-trade clause or not — he’d have one by now.

This is why you don’t give out no-trade clauses. Despite the fact that he’s coming off a .262/.322/.499 year with 32 bombs (nothin’ special for a left fielder, but that’d be a nice line for a DH) they’ll be lucky if one of the six or seven teams he’s willing to go to is interested. He’s at least still producing in terms of power, and while he’s not a good defender, he isn’t completely immobile like, say, Travis Hafner. I would think if they ate most of the $36 million they’d actually be able to get something of value for him. But the NTC limits that prospect severely.
