They let him walk over something like $600,000. That amount does not far exceed the value of any MLB player who contributes anything. Then he proceeded to provide value of at least 10x his contract that season. Prior to 2012 he far out-earned his pay every season.

It seems like this is just what Alfredo Aceves is like. As long as it stops with him then that is not too bad. They don’t want a repeat of last season when everyone seemed to be a problem for Bobby Valentine. The biggest problem though of course was Bobby Valentine!

From the looks of things, he couldn’t STAND Bobby Valentine. Given that no one else could either, I’m not sure Aceves is being a problem here. He may have been goofing around and lobbing pitches. You know, as a joke? Of course he’s not entitled to have a sense of humour anymore, so he probably got told to cut it out. He could easily revert back to being the same model citizen he used to be. Long season ahead to find out.

I don’t get it. When he was with the Yankees he was a model citizen. There wasn’t one incident. He goes to the RS and all the sudden he’s a caner. There is more to it than that, .. there has to be.

Looks like he wanted to see what he could get away with under new guy Farrell. And it looks like he found out. Probably can’t move him (salary) so I’d bury him in the pen or cite some phantom injury and put him on the DL.

yeah, Im sure you were talking about how much of a genius stroke it was after the first year in Boston when he went 10-2 with a 2.61 era. in 114 innings. The whole team sucked last year, and he IS a head case.

But under 3 million for a guy who is 26-13 with almost every season era under 3.54 isnt that bad.

The Yankees let him go because of him being injured and because they would have had to tender him an offer that far exceeded his value after sustaining 2 consecutive injuries. And after his seeing his attitude with the Red Sox I for one am glad Cashman had the foresight to know when to let him walk. He’s a cancer and the only way to get rid of a cancer it to cut it out.

His value as a player outweighs the negative of his attitude. When that is no longer true, he will be gone. His contract isn’t that big and he was very good up until last year, when he was probably asked to do a little more than he was capable of. He is still a very flexible and durable bullpen arm who can spot start without all of the machinations usually required to move from relieving to starting and vice versa.

I was bummed when the Yankees let him walk, but this couldnt have turned out better. It’s like hes being payed to sabotage my most hated team in all of sports. What a blessing.

As fans, we wouldn’t mind the huge salaries paid to the few real superstars and “mere” stars if it weren’t that sacks of garbage like Aceves also make millions.

If guys like this are all the Sox can get for this amount of money, I have to question the basic competence of Ben Cherington and the entire Boston front office.
