Seems and sounds like a pretty regular guy, like a hockey player. Doesn’t he know baseball players aren’t supposed to be honest? In the future many of the athletes will just respond to potentially controversial questions with a two word answer “Derek Jeter” – recognized as shorthand for ” I”m not going to say anything that will allow you to create a controversy.” I think it would save everyone a bunch of time.

Yes he was, but he was originally acquired via trade. After he opted out and rumors floated a minimum of a 10 year deal, I bet 29 other GM’s all started calling each other with the same “holy shit can you believe the Yanks are going to go 10 years and $300M for this guy. Of course, the difference is that the Yankees can afford to pay to keep the players they develop and to sign away players other teams develop….whereas most teams can do one, the other, or neither. Most teams don’t have the money to keep their core together….much less keep all the players they want and buy others.

ARod was a FA when he last signed, not acquired in trade.

Jason Giambi and Roger Clemens both had to shave when they joined the Yankees. Randy Johnson had to cut off his mullet (thank god) when he joined the Yankees.

CC/Kuroda were FAs, Pettitte as a FA but was a farmboy, Nova/Hughes/Phelps are all from the farm

Almost entire relief core is from the farm system (Mo, Robertson, Chamberlain, with Montgomery likely to join them later in the year). Eppley was selected off waivers and Logan came in via trade. Rapada was released and signed as a FA.

So 2/9 position, 2/5 starters and 1/5 relief pitchers means they haven’t developed anyone? Come on…

Maybe, but if someone hypothetically offers me $175 million with a requirement to shave, and someone else offers me ‘only’ $165 million, I’m pretty sure I can find a way to be happy without that extra $10 million, especially considering the state of NY has one of the higher state income taxes anyway. Someone may not even have to beat the Yankee offer; all they have to do is get close enough.
