Hughes needs a good season, not an “it’s 2008 again” season. This certainly isn’t the best news for him, but it doesn’t rule out him being healthy the rest of the season. On the down side though it is important for him to get used to what is almost certain to be a patchwork/committee behind the plate. Gopher ball problems have been hurting him and I can’t help but wonder if he didn’t get along with Martin on some pitch selection, or is this back problem something chronic which causes problems with pitch location, or causes him to “tip” his pitches.

Their is never a good time for an injury but there are better times than others. With about 5 weeks till “real” baseball begins this could have happened at a worse time. He still has time to ease back into action.

The fact that an MRI detected a bulging disc is not in and of itself worrisome. Many/most people have bulging discs without any symptoms and are completely unaware of it. What would be important is whether the disc bulge is impacting upon a nerve. The story makes no mention of that, though the fact that Hughes suggests that he expects to be pain-free in 4-5 days indicates that whatever muscle pain he is currently feeling is likely unrelated to the disc bulge.
