I’d say an athlete that found his way into the middle of a melee like that isn’t nearly on the same level of innocence as a woman being beaten, but I see your point here Gator. He wasn’t exactly in a position to defend himself.

Gator, I’m no Cueto fan (he beats my team far too often). But for you to not see that most fans simply want to say their team is the best is blind in my opinion. I know you to be a Marlin fan (or a major marlin hater, can’t tell which sometimes). How would you feel if I told you one of your pitchers knocked a girl out in 1996, just about 11 months before getting a win in a game in the 97 series. Just straight up back handed her because she was “flirting” with another guy. Does your 1997 world series victory taste any less sweet knowing that? I’m assuming it does not, because you experienced something that most fans dream of.

I saw this incident happen and despite my pleas with my friend, she would not press charges and other than a simple police report nothing ever became of it. For that reason I couldn’t stand watching that team succeed, and I’d spit on the guy if I ever saw him again, but I’m not naive enough to think any Marlins fan isn’t happy they won the World Series that year. Winning within the confines of rules of the game is what sports are all about, and if a guy is a piece of crap scum bag on his way to the top of the sport, fans will overlook it for the sweet taste of victory. Hell I’d take a convict or two on my team for just a taste of the post season.

And if you need your athletes to be choir boy role models then someone close to you forgot to help set your moral compass at a young age. The truth is, sports are entertainment for me. I’ll worry about how the player performs on the field, someone else can worry about my entertainers’ morals. This sport has been full of corrupt, racist, pieces of shit for decades now, but you know what? I still watch because baseball is entertaining.

You know what happened when that brawl occurred? I told my kid it wasn’t ok to cheer for a fight in baseball, I told him Brandon Phillips probably should have known the cards hate him, I told him Cueto messed up, I told him Jason LaRue was a well liked catcher for the Reds for many years, then we sat back and enjoyed the rest of the baseball season. Done, story over (for most of the world).

Obviously we’re going to have to disagree here. You have called Cueto everything in the book for a few years now, your hatred of him is well noted. But if you think 99% of baseball fans wouldn’t cheer for Jonny Cueto if he pitched for their team, then you’re mistaken. And that is the only point I have that matters.

I realize everyone loves to hate the idiots on the other team. I Hate plenty of athletes and live it when they do something stupid like cueto did so i have more ammo. Truth is the guy is a damn good pitcher, and unless you’re looking for cueto to be a karate champion or a role model for your kids, all reds fan should care about is that he’s a damn good pitcher.

Gator everyone has their right to hate cueto with every ounce of their being. You know what though, he’s a really f-ing good pitcher and he helps the team I cheer for win a lot of games. For that reason I like him. The minute I need athletes to be the role models for my kids is the minute ill care if one time a guy kicked another guy when his back was against the wall. But for now my kids learn how to be good people from me, not from how millionaires behave on the field. So we cheer for cueto to lead our team to victory, because that’s what sports fans do.

I find it funny that of all of the posts that you make on here, the only ones that even come off even slightly coherent are the ones where you hate jonny cueto.

Oh…make no mistake. I don’t hate them. More of an irritant (like a younger sibling or a snot nosed neighbor). All of my friends are Redlegs fans.
I was born and raised in the middle of Reds/Cubs country.
Fortunately (for me)…I was brainwashed a Cardinals fan from a very young age. Thanks Dad!

I am with you 100% Thomas. If you read my post you would see I commented this has been something that has become prevelent over the last couple of years. And the example I used was just the last game I went to. And it happend to be a geriatric lady well into her 80′s.
It was kind of comical. Certainly caught me and my buddies off guard. That’s why they tried to usher me up the steps so quickly. They wanted to make that comment the last one I heard. They were certainly on cloud nine. This was the game your ex-cardinal ended on a walk off HR. But again…this is something that has gotten increasinly worse over the last couple of years. Stuff you typically only see/hear at a Bengals game.

Yeah…the culture has certainly changed. Living only 1 1/2 hrs west of Cincinnati I take in several Cards/Reds games a year. I have done this my entire life. I typically always have a great time watching the games and talking baseball with those around me. Keep in mind…I am usually with 3 to 4 buddies who are all die hard Redlegs fans too. I typically have no issues. Good natured ribbing back and forth. The way it should be.
Until last year. They have had some success over the last couple of years and appear to be quite full of themselves at this point. Last year…while walking up the steps after the game I had a “lady” (she had to be at least 80 years old) talk some of the most vile shit I have ever heard. Then she topped it off with “have a nice drive back home.”
Not exaggerating…she was easily 80 years old.
I just smiled and said “Thank you Ma’am…I will try.”
“Please make the playoffs this year so we can take you behind the wood shed.”
It was hard to get that last sentence out because my buddies were trying to push me up the steps. They wanted her smack talk to be the last thing I heard! They didn’t succeed.

Well, he’s certainly fond of pretending it never happened. Watching all the thumbs down in defense of that piece of garbage, I have to admit that I’m surprised. I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time in Cincinnati and continue to do so. I’ve always found folks open, friendly and warm up there.

It’s hard to square that with the disproportionate number of lowlives who come on here as Reds fans finding Buddha-knows-what reasons to defend this scummy little thug’s brutal behavior and actually to mock the defenseless guy he put in the hospital with it. Did some heavy rain wash all these so-called fans out from under their trailers or something?
