Ramon Hernandez getting hurt last season opened the door for Wilin Rosario to become the Rockies’ starting catcher and now Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com indicates that they’d like to trade Hernandez.

Colorado is also looking for some rotation depth, but it’s hard to imagine being able to get anything for Hernandez aside from some salary relief. He’s owed $3.2 million at age 36 and coming off an injury wrecked season in which he hit .217 with a .601 OPS.

If they can dump Hernandez somewhere the Rockies could turn to Yorvit Torrealba as Rosario’s backup.

Depending on the progress of a couple minor leaguers, the Tigers may still be unsettled at backup catcher, and they certainly have enough Venezuelan connections for Hernandez to make sense.

Brayan Pena is never going to wow anyone, and it’s still not clear if/when Bryan Holaday or Ramon Cabrera will be ready for the big leagues. Given Alex Avila’s injury troubles, I’m suprised the Tigers haven’t shown more urgency at the catcher spot already. Avila will not be able to have another 800+ OPS season while also catching 140+ games, so a quality backup will be important.

The Red Sox will probably trade for him, I don’t think they have enough Catchers on their roster….
