David Ortiz - In 1996, Minnesota traded Dave Hollins to Seattle for PTBNL (Ortiz).

Moises Alou - In 1990, Montreal traded Zane Smith to Pittsburgh for Scott Ruskin, Willie Greene, and a PTBNL (Alou).

Coco Crisp - In 2002, Cleveland traded Chuck Finley to St. Louis a prospect and PTBNL (Crisp).

Those players WERE the PTBNL in trades.

Sep 13 1996: Ortiz sent from Mariners to Twins to complete deal made earlier as PTBLN
Aug 16 1990: Alou sent from Pirates to Expos to complete deal made earlier as PTBNL
Dec 8 2005: Gio sent from White Sox to Phillies to complete deal made earlier as PTBNL
Aug 7 2002: Cardinals sent Coco Crisp to Indians to complete deal made earlier as PTBNL

I would venture a guess that more PTBNLs do not pan out as excellent starters than do, but his list was valid. Even Crash.

proudlyfrench.... you will have to enlighten me. Were any of those players you mentioned traded even up just for the PTBNL or just Cash Considerations?
Let me rephrase that, besides Carp, Wells is a bench player now. Gutierrez is 30. Smoak is on the bubble this season and might be traded. So yes they still have Seager, Ryan, Ackley (who is one of my favorites) Montero but I still see a lot of promise gone. From those players not for the future because I do believe the M's can be competitive this year very much so

You know you look at all the M's prospects who were brought up a few years ago, and a lot of them have already gone. It just shows you how hard it is to bring up a strong farm system. This is why I think there should be some kind of cap. I wasn't for it when I was younger but seeing how it is SO difficult to bring up a healthy and strong farm system i'm all for it now these past few years. The Rays are the exception, the Indians, Mariners, and Royals are the rule. I hope the Royals can turn it around and get production but it looks like the M's have given up on a lot of their young prospects.

When the concept of a PTBNL is used straight up for another player, like in this situation, is it a PTBNL because that PTBNL depends on Carp making the 25-man roster or not? If the Red Sox end up designating him for assignment is the "cash consideration" just paying for the paperwork? If Carp makes the team out of Spring Training, do the Mariners get a somewhat decent player in return? It's funny to me that the Mariners might be hoping that Carp does really well with the Red Sox so they get a good player in return but at the same time if he performs well for the Red Sox then they will miss out on that production.

Not a bad pickup for the Sox, especially at that price. Like most of Cherington's offseason moves, this is not a "sexy" pickup. However, Carp is certainly a decent guy to have on the bench and he's probably a better backup option than Overbay. Plus the Sox have control for a few seasons if he works out.

I guess if you are the Red Sox you can never have to many platoon players OR backup 1st basemen. Looks like the handwriting maybe on the wall for Overbay. He's probably gone. BTW, you can always tell the value of a player when he's traded for the "PTBNL or Cash considerations".
