David Price backtracks on his facial hair comments

David Price backtracks on his comments yesterday that he wouldn’t play for the Yankees because of their rule against beards:

“It probably wasn’t the best thing to say, but I didn’t mean anything by it,” Price said. “I wasn’t looking to offend the Yankees. It’s probably the best organization in all of sports. Not just baseball, but all of sports. I didn’t mean anything (against) the New York Yankees. I’ve had friends on that team for multiple years.”

Hate to see a man so unprincipled that he’d throw a perfectly mediocre beard like he has under the bus like this. Shame, really.

“… It’s probably the best organization in all of sports. Not just baseball, but all of sports…” Truer words have never been spoken.

    • sknut - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:15 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are on line 1 and would like to have a word with you.

      • uyf1950 - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Of the 17 Titles the “Lakers” have won weren’t 5 of them won by the Minneapolis Lakes the forerunner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Seriously an organization that’s been around a mere 50 years +/-. Heck I’ve still got Converse “Chuck Taylor” high tops in my closet that I’ve saved from my youth that have more history then the Los Angeles Lakers.

      • Kevin S. - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:28 PM

The Lakers play in a league that *actually* has a competitive balance issue as opposed to the perceived issue in baseball. Try again.

      • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:38 PM

To paraphrase Shaq: The Lakers are an excellent WNBA team.

      • kopy - Feb 21, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Green Bay Packers are on line 0.

    • stlouis1baseball - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Yes…and the Boston Celtics are on line 2.

      • uyf1950 - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:01 PM

The same Boston Celtics that play in a league where over 50% of the teams in the division make the playoffs. Come on stlouisbaseball. Heck they aren’t even #1 sports team in their own city of Boston. Nice try but no “cigar”.

      • badintent - Feb 22, 2013 at 5:14 PM

Scott Boras is on line one
        IMG is on line 2
Gillettee is on line 1 about a commercial shaving…………………………………….

    • stlouis1baseball - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:29 PM

“The same Boston Celtics that play in a league where over 50% of the teams in the division make the playoffs.”

Yes. But if that doesn’t work for you I have another option.

The Carmel, IN High School Girls Swim Team is on line 3.

      • uyf1950 - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:42 PM

stlouis1baseball, now you are being just plain silly. I’m sure all 81,000 plus residents of Carmel are very proud of their Girls Swim Team. Have a good day.

    • stlouis1baseball - Feb 21, 2013 at 4:32 PM

“stlouis1baseball, now you are being just plain silly. I’m sure all 81,000 plus residents of Carmel are very proud of their Girls Swim Team. Have a good day.”

Hahaha! Yes I am. However, wouldn’t you be proud of a team that won TWENTY THREE consecutive state championships? Hell…the whole state is proud of them. How could you not be?
On a side note…I didn’t realize Carmel had that many people. I was sure it was closer to 50,000.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 21, 2013 at 6:56 PM

        Rock on.

  2. greej1938l - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:14 PM

    Slow day today Craig?lol

    • bigharold - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Looks that way. His initial statement wasn’t that news worthy his walking it back is less so.

  3. thebadguyswon - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:14 PM

    Now he’s being a ball-washer.

  4. vallewho - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:23 PM

His agent probably told him to tone-it-down…An offer from the NYY can be a nice bargaining tool during FA.

  5. number42is1 - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:33 PM

“It’s probably the best organization in all of sports. Not just baseball, but all of sports.”

how long till he backtracks on that one?

    • bigharold - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:57 PM

Generally there is no need to back track on either the truth or the obvious. We here on the bridge of the Death Star doubt he”l retract it.

      • number42is1 - Feb 21, 2013 at 4:01 PM

That would be like a player on a brand new team talking about how his former team beat his new one in the WS once.. would NEVER happen.

  6. hughhansen - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Speaking of Price, it looks like the “Top Posts” section might be broken. It’s been the same three for a very long time (in the exact same order).

  7. randygnyc - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Whether he’d shave or not makes no difference. I’m sure his agent had a few choice words with him about alienating a potential bidder for his services. When they Yankees are involved, the dollars are usually higher. Regardless of where he eventually signs.

  8. tcostant - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:50 PM

I’m sure he talked to his agent. More bidders are always better, even if you have no desire to sign there, it can drive up the price.

  9. stlouis1baseball - Feb 21, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Well…then I am back tracking on my previous backing of David Price.
I really respected the man for sorta’ backhanding the Yankees.
He likes his beard. They don’t like beards. He dislikes them. It was pretty simple really.
    Now? Johnny Backtracker.

    • indaburg - Feb 21, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Yeah, he’s just being a total kiss ass now.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 21, 2013 at 6:57 PM

      Pandering

  10. mybrunoblog - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:25 PM

“It’s probably the best orginization in all of sports. Not just baseball but in all of sports”
Good……very good David…(creepy Dr Evil laugh) Ha ha ha ha ha ha,……

  11. tfbuckfutter - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:52 PM

    Pff….what a pussy.

Oh well, probably will look better shaved anyway….maybe with just a small strip left.

  12. brewcrewfan54 - Feb 21, 2013 at 3:58 PM

I could see this coming from a mile away.

  13. yousuxxors - Feb 21, 2013 at 5:07 PM

lol the packers ok dude get the cheese off your head. i would go with yabkees steelers lakers

  14. anxovies - Feb 21, 2013 at 6:42 PM

What does he care anyway? He draws that beard with a Magic Marker.

  15. jeremyb91 - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:20 PM

No one would have though Jason Giambia and Johnny Damon would have become Yankees based on their facial hair, yet the value of the almighty dollar convinced them to shave as will David Price learn how much extra he’ll get by being a Yankee.

  16. pooinyourface - Feb 22, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Truer words have never been spoken? How bout this: Theres no talent in buying players and illegal immigrants from everyone else’s teams and countries, juicing a bunch of roids, crushing everyone in the league then patting yourself on the back and calling yourself a “great” organization. If its cheating that were talking about than yea, truer words have never been spoken.

    • stlouis1baseball - Feb 22, 2013 at 5:18 PM

      Bicepts! You’re back.

  17. stackers1 - Feb 22, 2013 at 8:34 AM

I love what all the Red Sox fans said after Damon signed with the Yankees.

He looks like Jesus, throws like Mary & acts like Judas.

  18. cryogenichead406 - Feb 22, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Public figures are such pussies today. His performance will speak for itself. If he is kicking ass the Yankees will want him no matter what. Grow a pair David Price.
