I remember him writing a compare and contrast post for the Florida and Arizona spring training experiences. IIRC, Florida was better because the cities are smaller and the natives are more into it. Waffle House waitresses in St. Lucie wearing Mets caps and things of that nature. Arizona was better because the sites are closer together. This is important if you’re tasked with seeing as many teams as possible or following your own team when it plays road games. All considered, it seemed balanced and that I would prefer Florida.

He blew out his liver. It’s stereotypically Irish, I know. That was back in the late 30′s/early 40′s. He played independent league too for a bit. I have a great newspaper article about a riot in the stands at a game he played for the Atlanta Crackers. lol I’m really surprised that none of my seven uncles played. You do NOT call the family during Series week unless it’s an emergency.

I visited Tiger Town this morning. I was planning tomorrow but I had a change of plans, so I went.
I didn’t see Miggy or Prince or V or Coke (he’s my favorite Tiger– lot of heart, that guy) but I did see your ex. He said hi and looked wistful as he asked how you were.

Tiger Town is beautiful. I wasn’t expecting much from Lakeland because there is nothing out there. Lots of strip malls. 90 minutes from a beach. 30 from Disney et al. But Joker Marchant stadium is beautiful, probably the prettiest spring training stadium I’ve seen. It looked like a Spanish hacienda. Besides Torii (who was doing sprints in the outfield and looked good), Below (who very nicely stopped for autographs for some kids), and Fister (I am about the height of one of his legs), I didn’t recognize anyone. Lots of minor leaguers. No one was hitting the ball over the practice field fences, although it is 420 to straight center. I overheard someone say that yesterday, Verlander put on quite the pitching show and that he looked pumped. So, he’s clearly ready.
