I met Kyle’s Father-in-Law on afternoon last fall, who proceeded to share with a number of people all kinds of “dirty laundry” about how bad theCardinals organization was (obviously from Kyle’s perspective). Dad in law also claimed that the real decisions of where players go are completely determined by MLB, and not the the actual teams. If Lohse actually had that kind of arrogant attitude about his club, and MLB as well, to me it’s no wonder the Cardinals don’t want him. And since it’s such a small league, who could blame the other teams as well. ….Just sayin…

sabathia, I actually recommended the Pirates sign him in another comment yesterday. I think he’d be a great fit and might be the guy who pushes them over the top into a winning season, if not a playoff berth (the NL Central is going to be competitive this year, with the Reds on top, the Cardinals an 85-90 win team and Brewers playing .500 ball, in my opinion).

Personally, I would be excited to have Lohse back, mostly due to two question marks (Garcia and Shelby Miller’s shoulders) and a dud (Jake Westbrook) in the rotation. I don’t think that the front office is thinking that way, and, while I don’t think they’re willing to punt this season, they’ll accept some lumps if it means giving some rookies an extended chance.

Also, I’d bet Lohse and Boras were looking for $13 mil annual at least. I mean, going from $14 mil a year to $8 mil a year after coming off his best season isn’t what an agent is for, especially one like Boras. According to some Cardinals blogs, Lohse was asking for 5 years and willing to settle for 3-4. Now he’ll probably take 1/$8 mil just to get to spring training.

If Loshe sits out until after the draft, the draft pick compensation goes away, right? Perhaps he should just wait until a a few of this year’s crop of James Andrews patients reveal themselves.

Still, over the last 2 years he gave the Cards 400 innings of 3.00ERA pitching. While ERA is not the only indicator of how well a pitcher performed, it is a decent record of what happened. And that is studly. Considering that he has already achieved a certain level of studliness, and considering that the best prospects rarely work out, let alone draft picks, are the Cards really getting better with a sandwich round pick over Loshe?

While he turned down 1yr/$13MM, I can’t imagine he has been seeking $13AAV on his contract. I am guessing he wanted something like 3/$24, which would be a gretty good deal.

What about the Pirates? They already have 2 protected top-ten picks in this draft, and a Jeff Karstens-sized hole in the back of their rotation.

The Cardinals don’t have a stand against him….they just have a crap ton of young, cheap talented pitchers. They have 3 guys competing for one spot, and each of them are capable of being a league average or better starter. There is just no reason for them to sign Lohse because they don’t currently need starting pitching….even without Carpenter, they are still swimming in starting pitcher depth right now.

Lohse has been good for two years. The other two years of his deal, most Cards fans thought he was terrible, mostly because he was injured all of the time. The Cardinals’ front office doesn’t really have anything against Lohse, per se, but instead have a plethora of young, cheap options who may or may not be better than Lohse, depending on how the chips fall.

You don’t get the other team’s picks if they sign a QO free agent, the pick just disappears. The team that lost the player gets a new pick in the “supplemental round”.

This is the case where Scott Bor-ASS strategy is doubling back to bite him and his client. Nobody wants to deal with him, and throw in the draft pick for Lohse who has had success but doesn’t miss bats, an it’s buyer beware!

Sure they have to give up a pick to sign him. They’d be giving up the pick they’ll be getting from another team if he signs with anyone else. They’ve just decided they’d rather have that pick than have Lohse.

They offered him $13M for a year (that’s what the qualifying offer was this year). He said no. My guess is that he wants that $13M/yr for 3-4 years, and the Cardinals really don’t need that. They’ve got a ton of young pitching.

If he could hit and play 2B I think they’d take him up on it.

Yes the Draft doesn’t always yield gems. quite often picks turn out to be worth less than a lump of coal. Or take an exceedingly long time to develop. So there’s no guarantee – just as there’s no guarantee about what Lohse might be worth down the road.

Boras is looking for a deal of at least 3 or 4 years AND Lohse is tied to the loss of a draft pick. The Yankees aren’t going to go 3 or 4 years for a 34 year old Lohse and they certainly aren’t going to give up the 27th pick in the draft for him.

From everything I’ve read and heard about it, he didn’t do anything in particular to the Cards at all. He was a good player for them and all but it’s time to see what they’ve got in Miller, Kelly, and Rosenthal. There’s no doubt they’re thinking that at least two of them can give the team something close to what Lohse did last year but at a fraction of the cost. Yeah you can sign him for a discount right now, but why bother when you’ve got 3 guys already signed and the organization is high on each of them.

What did he do to the Cardinals to make them take this hard of a stance against him. They don’t actually have to give up a first round pick to sign him, and they lost Carpenter for the year. Loshe has been damned good for the past few years. What’s the deal??
