Jimmy Rollins answers Jonathan Papelbon, says Phillies lacked “identity” last season

As Craig pointed out this morning, Jonathan Papelbon raised some eyebrows when he told the Allentown Morning Call this week that he hasn’t seen any “leadership” since he has been with the Phillies.

It was easy to see Papelbon’s comments as a potential criticism of a veteran like Jimmy Rollins, since he’s the longest-tenured member of the team. However, Rollins told Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com today that he wasn’t offended by Papelbon’s comments and felt the club suffered from a lack of identity last year.

“Identity might be the word,” Rollins said. “We had a lot of moving parts last year. Parts coming in, a lot of new parts coming in. Regulars not being around, not being together, you know that bond that forms from being together.

“The bond was broken. We’re back together now. The glue is back together. You can have a lead singer, but without the man playing the guitar and drums it’s a different band.”

He’s presumably talking about fellow veterans Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, who were out of action for most of the first half last season. Anyway, I’m interested to hear who is the drummer and who is the guitarist in this analogy. This is just begging for a proper Photoshopping.

No leader ay Papelbon? Why didnt you step up and lead then? Just close out the games and limit the b.s.

I think the more pressing issue was that they weren’t a very good team.

People I hope you realize what this site does. They pick whole sentences out of what a guy says and then delete. They then copy and paste what remains and make it seem like thats what he said in the order that they said it. Its one thing just to copy and print 1 paragraph but picking apart a paragraph and then to put it back together is something totally different. Its extremely fake and dishonest.

This is what Rollins really said.

“I agree. I’d say we didn’t have the identity last year we had in previous years. And [identity and leadership] are basically one in the same. It’s nothing to take offense to. He didn’t say anything about this year. He was talking about last year. He didn’t say leadership is. Leadership was. … Me and Pap were actually at the golf course [Thursday] talking about that. He brought up the feel of the team this year compared to last year. The difference and how much better it is this year. It’s nothing to take offense to. The bond was broken. Now we’re back together. The glue is back together. You can have a lead singer, but without a man playing the guitar and drums, it’s a different band.”

You shouldn’t be surprised they they cut things out to make a certain point or to twist the meaning of a comment…this site is just like the rest of the liberal media and that’s the MO for all of them and this site is no different

Right, here you get a quick overview at what’s happening in baseball, which is good, plus the analytical equivalent of the “mean girls” table at the school cafeteria, which you just ignore.
