That’s assuming that Ryan Howard can play 160+ games per season. At this point, I’d expect him to only play in 130 games every year, so it’s more like $192k per game.

It’s an investment, and real estate is always a good investment, even if the value goes down – it doesn’t go down to zero like GM bonds did in bankruptcy. Even if a hurricane wipes the barrier island clean, the insurance will cover it. He can afford it as long as he’s getting big baseball income, but there will always be another young athlete flush with cash to buy it. Meanwhile, he can borrow off some of the equity. It actually IS a better investment than many others.

Once upon a time when I used to make quite a bit of money I built a vacation home on a lake; it was a beautiful place which over a period of years I came to realize was the worst mistake I ever made, as the payments and upkeep made it so the house owned me. THe good part was that it forced me to re evaluate my priorities and marriage. SO, different opriorities with a diffferent mate. AM much happier without the house and the overfed harpie of a mate.

How do you judge a player’s “love for the game”? It’s a difficult thing. Some players, after they’re done in MLB, play in Indy leagues or winter leagues that pay peanuts. You can say that Jose Canseco and Manny Ramirez are media whores, and you may be right. But the Worcester Tornadoes and the Cibao Aguilas aren’t exactly awash in media coverage. They’re playing in those places because that’s where they can play.

You frequently hear why anyone needs a house like that. The simple answer is that you have to spend the money someway. You can’t take it with you, and I suppose a house is a better decision than a lot of other options.

Just something I heard on the radio when Tom Brady and Gisele were buying/building a $30+ million house. Made more sense than anything else I’ve ever heard.
