“just six years ago” is quite a long time frame for pitchers….six years ago Kelvim Escobar won 18 games, Ian Snell pitched 200+ innings, Rich Hill struck out 183 guys, and Daisuke Matsuzaka still had potential as a starter.

Not trolling, just being realistic. Asking Ubaldo Jimenez and Scott Kazmir to each find the missing 3-5mph off their fastballs and then also improve their pitches-per-inning rate and cut down on the wildness (as has historically been an issue for both pitchers) is a lot to ask. I’m not saying it’s an impossibility, but it’s a highly dubious scenario.

I get that in February and March, hope springs eternal, but let’s at least keep our feet on the ground while our heads are in the sky.

Serious question. Why doesn’t a guy like this learn to throw a knuckleball? I know it’s easier said than done, but really, what does he have to lose?

I’m rooting for Kaz. Some of the few positive memories I have of the Rays prior to 2008 were thanks to this guy. Just 6 years ago as a 23 yr old, he led the league in strikeouts and had a bWAR of 5.5. And now? Yeah, I hope Francona is right.

Actually before that 2010 season he won 12 games with a 3.99 ERA in 2008 (his first full season) and in 2009 won 15 games with a 3.47 ERA. Not dominant like in 2010 but he was still darned good. I can see him getting back to a 14-15 win season with a mid-3 ERA for the Indians and I’m sure they’d be just fine with that.

Still only 27 years old. He’s got plenty of time to return to his old, dominant form. If he and Ubaldo Jimenez can both do that, the Indians will be a team we should all start taking very seriously.
