There’s a great SyFy channel movie in this. A bunch of cloned Curt Schilling zombies invade Yankee Stadium and the only thing that can save mankind is David Wells, now working as a security guard who obsessively watched over Babe Ruth’s plaque.

Seriously, it almost writes itself.

Lets not get too crazy. Schilling is a hypocrtie, but the state of Rhode Island is the worst in this whole thing. Crony capitalism at its worst. Private investors turned him down because they knew it was foulhardy to give a former pro player nearly 100 million to play with in a business he knew nothing about.

I’m glad you’re trying not to lay your values upon others. It takes a lot of practice, keep it up.

Not all wealth is bestowed upon the wealthy. Some of them earned what they have. In any case, how they spend it has no bearing on whether they deserve to have it. Put another way: let me know when you strike it rich, so I can instruct you how you should and should not spend your fortune. If you buy anything nice for yourself, then you don’t deserve your money.

Obviously the sock isn’t meaningless to someone. That postseason meant an awful lot to more than a few people. Maybe the sock is sentimental, or a status symbol, or even a financial investment for the future. Maybe it’s just a fool being easily parted from his money.

Spending that much on a sock may look pretty silly to you and I. But people spend absurd sums of money on art, stamps, butterfly collections, baseball cards, cars, homes, and dog knows what. The sock isn’t any different. There’s no accounting for taste.

Also, what looks like a lot of money to you and I is chump change to others. If someone like the 252 Million Dollar Man bought the sock, it would be like a $100,000 person buying a combo meal at McDonald’s. It’s just not significant to their net worth or what they give to charity. They’ll give whatever they give regardless of the sock.

Uh, I think you got the wrong game there. The Red Sox lost game 2 of the ALCS, but this sock was from game 2 of the World Series. And, since the Sox swept my Cards that year, that means this overpriced soiled foot covering was from a win.

Seriously. I try not to lay my values upon others, but this is absurd. If you are wealthy enough to pay nearly 100k for a sock, and you decided you simply had have to have a meaningless bloody rag, AND you could find no other use for that 100k to better the world, then you simply do not deserve the wealth bestowed upon you.
