Deathmonkey, give it up man. They’ve won 95-97 games each of the last 3 years. You have a very rudimentary understanding of baseball if you’re honestly suggesting they need to completely rethink their approach because of a handful of individual games over the last few years. In this case your argument is based off of one game. Ridiculous.

Baseball isn’t a sport where the best team will necessarily win the WS every year. The true measure of a team’s success is their record at the end of the regular season. The post-season is largely a crap shoot.

Don’t forget that the Yankees could have won the first game against the TIgers after Ichiro led off in extra innings with a double. These great HR hitters were unable to move him to third with less than two outs….couldn’t even hit the ball the other way. I’m not unhappy that Russell Martin is gone. I wouldn’t be upset if Granderson were traded away. I think it’s time to retool. This team has shown that it’s not championship worthy as currently constituted. Why should they continue to fool themselves as these guys just get older?

Diaz can’t hit righties, Rivera can’t hit anymore period, both have, uh, defensive shortcomings that will play “well” in that compact Yankee Stadium left field, and both are older than dirt. I’m not sure if either is “cable”, but neither is “capable”.

Also don’t forget* that if Peralta doesn’t make that ridiculous diving stop on Arod’s grounder in the first inning, it’s likely 2-0 Yanks with runners on 1st and 2nd. Fister pitched out of two bases loaded situations in the first two innings and the yanks got zero runs.

*yeah I know, hindsight/predetermined outcome/etc, but in a series where the Yanks got zero breaks, they could have used that one.

Some people just do not understand your sense of humor Randy. By the way, the Yankee starting pitcher (some turkey who is unlikely to make the team) hit Lawrie. Did not see the game, but from what I read in the box score, it appears that Lawrie was hit first.

Get it yet? They’ve made the playoffs in those 3 years, which is more than most of the “small ball” teams can say. Whether or not they performed up to their potential in those series is a moot point considering the sample size.

Last year, the Tigers led the league in GIDP, was one SB away from being last, and were among the cellar-dwellers in sac flies and sac hits. They only had slightly fewer strikeouts and a couple more sacrifice hits than the Yankees did, while being significantly worse in the SB, GIDP and SF categories. As a Rays fan I even have to say this sucks for the Yankees. I was watching the game MLB network from my home town of Tampa and I knew as soon as he hit him he was going to be out for some time as it was nasty. I hope he gets better and had the same power when he comes back, just not against the Rays.

A preference for small ball over stacking your lineup with power hitters is another meme I’ll never understand. The yankees had the most home runs, the most runs, and the most wins in the AL last year, and they didn’t bunt or steal for shit. You really can’t make the argument that they’ve gotten better by losing home runs, no matter how “scrappy” they are. Those people who want to go back to small ball must not enjoy winning very much.

And that postseason argument is bunk too – they played fantastically over 162 games and like crap for the last 9. That’s a small sample error if I’ve ever seen one.
