I hope you’re right. Mattingly NEEDS a carrot. He is that lackadaisical a manager with on-field moves and lineups. The game they were eliminated last season revealed Mattingly at his typical worst, and the owners took note.

I hope they told told him “WIN and you’ll get the extension” just to shut up the likes of Torre, who had no right—he works for all 30 teams—butting in to Dodger business. Torre’s owner, McCorpse, is just that.

I think this was put out there in an attempt to try a difuse a ticking media time bomb. With Magic among others being on record as saying this is Mattingly’s season to deliver, it could have become a circus if there wasn’t a carrott of some kind on the end of that stick.
