The trade was made by one of the worst GM’s in modern baseball. Tony Reagins was in waaaay over his head and not only made some questionable moves in regards to player personnel, but alienated some of the Angels’ key scouting people.

Yeah his retirement will be about as much his choice as Tony Reagins retiring from baseball operations was.

Probably the worst trade the franchise will ever make when you consider Arte Moreno was talking this up as a huge upgrade over the contract he would have had to give Adrian Beltre that offseason. Priceless.

I like how Wells has gotten in front of the story; he’ll be resigning from major league baseball as opposed to being fired from it. In his next career, he’s going to be a spin consultant for a media conglomerate or a politician.

Before he tore his labrum he was a damn good center fielder for the Blue Jays. From 2002 to 2006 (when he got the 7yr/$126,000,000 deal) he won three Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, had two All-Star appearances, averaged 150+ games a year, hit 139 HRs, drove in 487 runs, stole 47 bags, and posted a slash line of .288/.336/.499 with an .835 OPS and 114 OPS+. He also posted 18.2 WAR over that period, including 5.8 WAR in 2006.

Then he signed the contract, promptly tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder in 2007, then broke his wrist in 2008, and it’s been pretty much all downhill from there.

It’s pretty easy to point the finger at J.P. Ricciardi, who signed Wells to that mega-contract and also signed BJ Ryan to that terrible 5yr/$47,000,000 contract. The reasoning behind the acquisition of Vernon Wells for Napoli & Juan Rivera is still a mystery to me, though perhaps they figured Nap would never meet his hitting potential and that Wells would continue to perform like he did in 2010, which is to say, adequately.
