Calling it a liberal media conspiracy might give us a rush of sweet, sweet self-righteous pride, but I’m not sure it’s warranted.

Compared to other media markets, the Phoenix metro area is not particularly large. It’s hundreds of miles from any other major city. Our baseball team is new(ish) and, for people who aren’t actually fans of the Diamondbacks, it doesn’t have a particularly interesting story. We have no heated, historic rivals. And our organization doesn’t currently have any notable heroes or villains.

I don’t think anyone’s actually picking on the Diamondbacks, or conspiring against the state of Arizona. We’re just not very interesting.

Grit is one of the four elements that make up the baseball universe…at least to Kirk Gibson’s alchemical training. Pus is a result of that element, Grit, coming into excessive contact with human weakness. Too much weakness and you’ve got pus and pus just takes the grit right out of you.

I love that Gibson refers to a thumb from which they had to drain puss to look for a splinter as “It looked like it might be getting infected”. What does he think puss is a result of? Grit? Scrap?

He’s actually a very good catcher, both offensively and defensively. Arguably one of the best in the league. And most of the time, it’s a lot of fun to watch him play.

On the other hand, he has had a couple of memorable arguments with his pitchers (namely Jose Mesa and Trevor Bauer) and he appears to have trouble letting them go. When he takes the fights to the media, it’s kind of embarrassing. His last unfortunate interview was only a couple weeks ago, so even though I’m usually a Diamondbacks fan, and a fan of Montero, I’m having trouble mustering a lot of sympathy for him right now.
