Pukelis as a Yankee is just wrong. I’ve never accepted Aroid as a Yankee even after all these years and Pukelis is an even bigger stretch. Watching him bat is just painful and annoying.

I have two to add to that list.

Being a huge San Francisco 49ers fan and Joe Montana fan, I truely never got used to him in his Kansas City Cheifs uni. He had decent sucess in K.C. but nothing like In S.F.

The other I would mention is my favorite Sox player from the 80′s, Dwight Evans who spent I believe 2 years in Baltimore with the Orioles before hanging the cleats up. Shame…

Youkilis was nearly the perfect player. He satisfied every fan. He was tough and angry and he hustled and really seemed like he cared, so he was popular with fans who like that kind of thing. He hit .300 a few times, so he had that base covered. He had some pop in his bat and once drove in 100 runs, so he had that going for him as well. He also was a good fielder, and he could get on base, and this made him popular with the stat-oriented folks. Importantly, was annoying to fans of other teams, most notably Yankee fans. Because the Sox/Yanks rivalry was so intense, this was important. In fact, he was so annoying that it affected the other team’s players, as that doofus Joba Chamberlain used to plunk him every chance he got.

Rod Carew as an Angel? As a Twins fan that is still hard to fathom — but I looked it up and found out that he played for the Angels for SEVEN years, six of them as an all-star. It still seems wrong to me; but perhaps LA fans feel differently.

I agree! I still think of Reggie on that great Oakland team with Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Joe Rudi, Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneris, Ken Holtzman, and Blue Moon Odom, and it makes me happy. To me, Reggie playing for the Yankees symbolizes everything that’s wrong with MLB’s competitive balance. Yes, Reggie is the archetypal Yankee — because they symbolize the same thing.

Take it back just a little bit further…how about Sal “The Barber” Maglie having been a NYGiant for years (and hating the other National League Team, the Brooklyn Dodgers!!) winding up in a Dodger uniform? As a young kid, I couldn’t imagine how or why this could be possible…little did I know that they really played for money…

I will remember those words from Gary Thorne for all of my life, as the Red Wings beat the Blues early in the second overtime of the seventh game of the 1996 Western Conference Semifinal. I wasn’t even 10 yet, but I woke my whole family up yelling when it happened. It’s my first great pro sporting memory I guess, and nothing else is even close.

The point is, the Blues are the 2nd team I think of when I hear Gretzky.
