I’m not saying that I agree with Torii’s remarks, but he is entitled to his opinion – Whether you like it or not. That does not make him a scumbag.

Torii may or may not have paid the victim off, and only a few people will ever know that. BUT… IF he did it, it was because he was trying to salvage his sons life/career. He knows damn well he wouldn’t go to Notre Dame on a football scholarship If he was in prison.

That does not mean Torii agrees with it or isn’t unhappy with him, but do you really think a majority of the parents out there would let their kid go to prison if they could prevent it?

Again, that does not make him a scumbag.

We all know what (supposedly) happened was wrong, but nothing Torii said or possibly did here makes him some kind of lowlife…

I don’t see zacksdad’s suggestion as necessarily cynical. At least, I don’t see why it would be more wholesome to suggest that the alleged victim lied about rape in order to extort money or win attention. It strikes me that that is the cynic’s response (the male cynic, anyway).

There’s a big difference between recanting and admitting you were lying before. You do nobody any favors by trashing the alleged victim.

That’s an archetypal narrative, yes. We’re talking about a particular teenager – and girls who fabricate or lie to get even with people for various reasons is also an archetypal story. Fact is, no one has any evidence yet that Torii paid anything to anyone but his lawyers. And if the cops had five month’s worth of solid evidence, including her prior testimony, recanting her story would have gotten her slammed with a perjury charge. I don’t see anything about that here. Looks to me like her “word” was the whole story, since the grand jury didn’t think anything else was solid enough to pursue an indictment.

He is saying that Tori paid off the girl to recant her story. Without her testimony the grand jury couldn’t do anything. And it isn’t overly cynical to think that since this is something the wealthy have been able to do since we invented wealth: buy off your enemies.

In this case the enemy was a gang raped teenage girl who I hope held out for at least seven figures.

Other than your atrocious cynicism and rotten outlook on life, what in particular convinced you that the kid was actually guilty when the victim admitted she was lying bout it? How, for example, did Torii Hunter’s BIG MONEY get to the grand jury members who declined to indict the kid? You got details, I assume?
