Yep, that was a surprise to me too. The only reason I can think of was the left handed bat, and I guess he felt he needed a bigger raise than NYY would give. Ibanez really played a whole heck of a lot more in the field than ever intended because of the Gardener injury and did not disgrace himself. It is probably a trick of the imagination, but he made that .221 average look a lot better than it was because it just seemed some of his hits were of that rare "timely" variety. I totall agree about Hafner, he has not had a "healthy" season in @ five years.

Because if they didn't report it, and it later came out that Eduardo Nunez was not an option to replace Curtis Granderson, you'd be sitting there scrolling down yet another eighty-post comment section bemoaning the decline in journalistic integrity.

Better just to report it and get it over with.

It's mind boggling why they did not resign Ibanez. He is not an everyday starter but CAN play the field , can play in NY, and can be clutch. Signing Hafner as a last resort was a waste of time since he is made of glass and can't play the field.

Please keep posting Nunez stories, so I can keep linking this .gif. Look at that defensive prowess from Nunez (and Ramiro Pena @3B!)

best part is that was declared a hit!

Single to 3B (Ground Ball to Weak 3B); Fukudome to 3B; Johnson to 2B

As everyone else has said this is not a surprise...especially since the NYY have said that they are sticking Nunez at SS and nowhere else. Nowhere else would seem to me anyway, to include him not being a fourth outfielder. When we look at Almonte, Rivera, etc I really have to say this is visible proof of what a lackluster offseason it was in New York. Yes, Rivera,Kuroda, Pettite and Youkilis were signed. But there is probably the thinnest bench in recent history. In fact recent might be the the only part of that comment that is stretching it. While it seems like the NYY have 50 pitchers in camp the OF options are a bad joke imo.

This surprises no Yankee fans. He hits like a backup infielder. We never really rag on that (except when he gets overexposed because Joe keeps giving A-Rod and Jeter half-days off instead of using a dedicated DH) because it's his glove that's not up to the job. But that doesn't mean we don't also realize he'd be preposterously overexposed as an every day corner outfielder. It's either muddle through with someone like Zoilo Almonte (who I have no real faith in) or see what the price tag on Soriano is.
