It’s no different than kids taking karate, aikido, or taekwondo. An essential part of the training is that the techniques are to be used in competition, not to take advantage of other kids. Part of being a good parent is observing the class, and making sure that it’s competently run.

Look, I’m not one of those guys who runs around saying “I didn’t wear a bike helmet and I lived.” That seems more like a series of miracles in retrospect. But we should be careful not to suck all of the fun and adventure out of life. At this point I’m in favor of almost any physical activity that gets kids out of the house and looking away from a screen.

Most bullies pick on people cause they are vulnerable. MMA, TKD, Wushu, Judu etc all are extremely good for children to take. All of these physical arts teach focus,confidence and discipline thus reducing vulnerabilities. Trained by a proper school these children will not resort to there training unless backed into a corner. And if every now and then a bully get disciplined by ones of his/her targets well so goes the circle of life.

“Kage Fighting For Kidz.” Count me in the “freak out” group, Gleeman. I hope that these morons are ready to get their asses sued when some idiot child, with a parent’s tacit approval, chokes some other kid out on the school playground and the brat requires stitches, gets brain damage, or hell, even dies, all over what a another kid SAID. What the hell ever hap’d to playground punch-ups, karate, or judo — you know, more defensive methods of dealing with violence? Do I need to point out that this excerpt doesn’t mention violence, just name-calling? The article itself doesn’t even mention physical attacks explicitly, just “bullying.” “No bullying” is about understanding difference and diversity, NOT giving anyone a license to choke a bitch when they SAY something mean. Plus, who’s gonna hire the refs? Who will supervise the matches? Who’ll call the knockout and stop the beat-down?

I’m fully on-board with “no bullying” and “It gets better.” But physically choking out the classmates that are taunting you is only perpetuating the wrong, and could potentially incur nasty litigation, not to mention permanent harm. I love that bit above where Fielder, obviously not thinking things through, says “I just never want them to feel, have their feelings hurt or lose confidence because of what someone says.” So you pay for your kids to become MMA fighters over what someone SAYS? Do the kids get an ethics and/or rules of engagement lesson with their ass-kicking how-to? “Fielder says that MMA is turning his kids into men.” So THAT’S what a “man” is?

Fitting that it’s an article from an Orlando station, catering to an audience of assorted dimwits in central FL. (I’m from near there, I know a few.) Quoted is the owner of the gym — now there’s an objective source — who actually says “It’s not about fighting, it’s about fitness” and “Unlike the violent pros, his goal is not to teach how to fight in a cage.” “Children as young as 5″ don’t forget the protective headgear! “The videos may look painful, but it’s become popular.” Well then, if it’s popular, sign me up! What a joke. Cue the Bugs Bunny GIF…
