Exactly, this is very much like the Verlander $200 million story... would he have liked to be the first $200 mil pitcher yeshe would. Does Joba think he's capale of starting...of course he does...his stat line is not really any worse than two guys in the NYY rotation. (Net of the effects of his injuries since he last started) Did he sit there and say something like "I should be starting, not Hughes, Nova or Phelps." No he did not. Did he say "If I don't get a guaranteed chance to start I do not want to play here any more." Again, no he did not.

Joba certainly has had a few personal issues, and has the flare for tettering on the edge of self destruction. So far though, he has not completely gone over the edge. @ 25 years ago a couple of young players burst onto the NY baseball scene, one was a pitcher, the other I believe was an outfielder. They were swallowed up in a media circus...and flamed out in semi spectacular fashion. Their self destructive tendencies went up to and eventually included imprisonment. Both of these players did briefly redeem themselves with career concluding sucesses with the NYY. What I am getting at here, and in no way trying to diminish the seriousness of the DUI, is that Joba having burst on the scene at age 22, having suffered some family and career adversity has not fared nearly as badly as guys in similar settings did in the same media market a quarter century ago. Is there a need for further maturation? Certainly...but we have all seen sadder and worse stories than Joba. I for one hope he has a decent season, matures some more, and either gets a decent FA deal, or maybe just maybe gets a 2 year deal in New York as a middle or set up reliever.

No, he didn't. Like most other athlete responses, he was asked a question and answered it honestly. He didn't go out looking for reporters saying, "hey you, I got something i want to tell you!" Here's the response from Feinsand's article. I'll bold the important part:

Speaking with reporters after the outing, Chamberlain was asked what his ultimate aspirations were as he enters his free-agent year.

"This is probably going to spark a bunch of stuff," Chamberlain said. "But it's one of those things where it's like, do you think you have the capability to start? Yes. Do I have four pitches that I can throw for a strike? Yes. Do I have two plus pitches in the bullpen that I can throw at any time? Yes.

Inside Sherman's Head: Oh, this guy isn't going to be around much longer? OK, I will make up some sensational crap about him since the repercussions are limited and the interest level could be sky-high.

The Yankees have jerked Joba around for years, leading to multiple injuries and diminished earnings and earnings potential. All he has done throughout is offer his assessment that he feels he is capable of being a starting pitcher in the major leagues. And the evidence supports that assertion fully. He has never demanded one position or another. He has never demanded a trade. (**cough**not michael young**ahem**excuse me!) He has always done his job to the best of his abilities, which has generally been quite good. What's the problem here?

@ThatGuy Chamberlain has actually been more consistent than Hughes or Nova have ever been when starting.

His 2008 starts were between early-June & late July (11 of them):

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=chambjo03&t=p&year=2008

Gave up 3 runs twice, 0 runs twice and either 1 or 2 runs six times & had one bad start (his last) where he gave up 5 runs.

2009 as a starter:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=chambjo03&t=p&year=2009

April three starts with 1 run yielded...one bad start.
May three QS, one bad start and one where he left game early as precaution after taking come-backer off him.
June 4 QS, six total starts yielding 3 runs or less.
July 5 starts, only gave up more than 3 runs once.
August he had a bad month but even then he was very cosnistent, giving up 4 runs three times, 2 runs once and one start where he got bombed.
September they had him on the dumb ass 60 pitchers per start s***. STILL very consistent. Gving up a couple runs per start with one horrific start out of six.

Despite being the human yo-yo and never complaining once he did a remarkable job providing a level of consistency that Nova nor Hughes have really managed to do.

True, but what are the odds that Sherman has done the research and knows exactly how each of those pitchers has performed on a start by start basis?
To be fair, giving a stat-line over the course of 43 starts gives zero indication of a pitchers consistency. He could have had those exact stats in every start or half the starts with a 0 era and half with with a 9.
