They haven’t established a limit yet. So why not Cano? They are the big dog now, not the Yanks.

Maybe we can refer to the agent as “Darth Boras” from now on. At any rate..this is the first salvo to be sure, I am just not convinced how many salvoes there really will be. The fact that the NYY are actually tossing numbers to Cano before his curent deal is up is certainly a signal to ALL involved they are serious. Especially the fans that know they do not usually do this kind of negotiating. Since there have been suggestions that there is no “home town discount” being offered, the Yankees are maneuvering this into a situation where they can spin this any way they want. If they have put something much more than the silly $75 million Gleeman uses as the example out there, and it hasn’t been well received they may go into “no talking during the season mode”. That will have the potential of making Cano (and shockingly Boras) the bad guys if they decide not to make any more offers until after the season or at all for that matter. If things aren’t going well this season, testing the trade market at the deadline is not out of the question. I disagree that they would not get anything for a 3 month rental of Cano. The theoretical suitors would be contenders, who for the most part, would figure to have some payroll available, and probably try to retain him. In no case would the Rays, Jays or the other AL east teams have a shot anyway because the one caveat I think would be ‘not in the division.’ Another possibility that no one would want to have happen, but after what we saw this week can’t be ruled out, is that Cano could get injured in the WBC. That would be (no pun intended) a game changer.

I agree. If the rules can do it I’d also appreciate if they load the $ up after year one. Since its all guaranteed then it doesn’t make a difference to Cano (or shouldn’t) and would help with the $189 thing.

ez, You had me confused there for a minute. Boras represents both Carlos Gonzalez and Carlos Gomez. . . I confuse them sometimes.

I was thinking the same thing about a short term rental, but the Brewers got a good return when they traded Zack Greinke to the Angels. Jean Segura was BA’s #55 prospect last off season and the Brewers have him listed as their starting SS. They also got two AA pitchers with control issues. So that’s quite a bit more than the proverbial bag of grass stained and out round batting practice balls.

Are they? Everybody assumes the Dodgers are in on all the free agents, but they’ve already got $165 million committed for next season, and that’s not including the roughly $20 million or so Kershaw will command in his final year of arbitration, plus Ellis and Jansen should command a fair amount in arb if they build on last seasons success. Even assuming they decline all their club options, that still puts them just under $200 million before factoring in Cano and a fifth starter. Are they ready to go to $225-230 million next year?

My take is the Yankees are willing to go 7 years with an 8th year vesting or team option somewhere in the $23MM per range. I hope they only go 6 years guaranteed with potentially a 7th year vesting at most. But we’ll see.

uyf1950…. my friend, what’s your take on this with Cano, I’m hoping the Yankees learned something from Arod, and they don’t let Cano hold them up for an outrages contract. A trade maybe in order, whats your feeling on it.

This offer by the Yankees is but the opening salvo between the “Evil Empire” and the “Evil Agent”. For better or worse there is plenty more to come I’m sure.

The Cano negotiations will probably end soon. Boras isn’t one to have his clients sign before FA, and I don’t think he’ll change his tactics with Cano. With Tex, CC and A-Rod on the books for a while it wouldn’t shock me if they lose him to free agency, or like Jason says trade him midyear.

Very different stuff for NY fans.

Who isn’t looking for a $200M contract? I am, too. But lordy, Boras doesn’t set the market. He may control the player but he can’t force something. (Unless Mike Illitch is in the room)

Certainly possible the Yanks deal Cano midyear if they are struggling and hope to re-sign him as a FA.

If they are going to offer a serious contract, make it for a ton of money but less years. Assume he’s looking for around a $200M contract*. I’d much rather they did something like 6/$180M (i’d prefer 5, but no chance) than 7-8/$200M.

*not saying it’s justified, but you know Boras is going to ask/look for one and the Dodgers scare the shit out of me if he hits FA.
