not impressed with there offseason? are you one of those crazy people that wanted to sign hamilton. Look at the yankee’s all those inflated contracts will start to hurt in the end. I’m completely happy watching them build up there system. infusing homegrown talent. and trying to pick the right pieces to fill the needs. When a bigtime player becomes available that fits your mo then go get him. that being said i think they will be exciting this year but probably not inline for a shot at the ship. Be patient.

I sincerely hope Gonzo, Crawford, and Beckett all have fine seasons (and careers) with the Dodgers…no ill will towards them or LA at all.

That being said, I sooo glad Cherington made that trade.

The way i look at it, we get Beckett too, whose ambition and pride has come back to him (2012 ERA in LA of 2.95).

Except Beckett’s peripherals were almost the exact same:

’12 -
Bos – 17.2 K%, 7.0 BB%, .294 BABIP
LAA – 20.8 K%, 7.7 BB%, .302 BABIP

Here’s what changed:

Bos – 65.3 Left on Base %
LAA – 82.0 Left on Base %

He was getting the same number of base runners, slightly more K’s, but almost 4/5 base runners were stranded instead of 3/5 while with Bos. When he has a good ERA, his strand rate is high, when he has a bad one it’s usually low. His peripherals have been very consistent throughout his career save that one stat.

Cherrington is collecting a lot of garbage, the kind of which Colletti used to find out back in the dumpster, including Dodger reject Shane Victorino.

Beckett is now pitching a lot better again, AGon has found his stroke, even Punto is playing decently. Only Crawford is lingering. If he doesn’t play better than he did in Bawston when he gets back, his contract will be eaten by the owners who can afford to, and he’ll be shipped back to TB for prospects.

I knew Crawford had blinding speed, but his ability to “steal” the title of “Mr. Glass” from Nick Johnson is impressive.
It didn’t bother me too much that he was constantly on the DL while with the Sawx (Yankee fan), but now that he has moved away I actually feel sad–Carl seems like a really nice guy.

Most MLB trades that involve cash only allow for an amount that will cover the team option year buyout fee.

Is that true? The Rangers were sending the Yanks anywhere from $7-8M a year when they traded Arod. They only stopped when Arod opted out thus cancelling the contract.

@jcmeyer, I am a Sox fan, and I hope he does turn the team around. But most observers were not impressed by the Sox’ offseason moves. Also, making a good deal with a team that is overpaying for everyone in sight is not that hard (as Moses points out).

@unclemosesgreen, however strictly speaking this isn’t “sending cash” but covering part of the departed players’ salary. Teams can and do cover large amounts of salary in trades.
