The Reds can’t keep him from going. If a player ends the season on the DL (like Bautista did), a team can keep him from participating for health reasons….if he ended the season on the active roster, they can’t.

I’m surprised the Reds allowed Votto to go. The Jays wouldn’t allow Bautista to go because he is just coming of an injury.

It’s no different when Hockey players go to the Olympics during the season. I just question the time of the year to do this torunament. If they did it in December, or even January, players would train in offseason to prepare for this tournament, and upcoming season. But it makes too much sense for Bud Selig to change.

Wouldn’t they have to get paid for it to be considered moonlighting. I think teams would catch more heat for standing in the way of a guy who wants to take the nique and somewhat rare opportunity of representing his country.

However I do agree with you in that that view changes when the player in question is coming of an injury. Ownership should be looking to protect such a significant investment.

Votto had been included on the 30 man roster even though he had not made a final decision. If Votto had not been on the 30 man roster, he probably could not have played unless someone dropped out. In the case of players who had been on the 30 man roster and then dropped out for various reasons, it is my understanding that they can be replaced.

Great news especially coming off the defection of a former Yankee who was upset because Canada wanted him to catch and the bone head wanted to play short even though he had never played the position before.

Not sure if Morneau or Votto will play first base. The other will be the DH.

Guys are still making decisions about this tournament? When is the deadline? I’ve been reading posts about guys deciding whether to play or not and they’ve already started some play in this thing. Not that anyone cares really….

Hard to believe teams lend approval for their franchise players to moonlight. Nearly unbelievable when that player is nursing a recent injury/discomfort.
