I’m with you G, but we are few in number, mostly because some of the advanced metrics do not favor him primarily due to his pitch to contact approach. Woe be the hurler that takes the ball every fifth day, keeps his team in almost every appearance, and helps himself to victories with a variety of the dreaded intangibles.

Yeah, right now if I’m Lohse I am trying to stay in the best possible shape, maybe follow a light throwing program on my own, with an eye towards having a successful second half with a contending team that has had a front line hurler sidelined for the balance of the stretch drive. If he can do that…in other words not be this years Roy Oswalt..then maybe he gets himself a decent 2 year deal for ’14-’15.

this makes no sense to me…the guy has been one of the top 10-15 pitchers in baseball the last two years…that’s not my opinion neither, his numbers support the claim…this rule with teams having to give up a first round pick for a FA who turned down a qualifying offer is a joke…the cardinals knew there was no chance he was gonna sign a 1 year deal after the last few seasons he’s had, so basically teams are able to just make a BS offer and get awarded with a 1st round pick…i think it’s a disgrace that these guys can’t get the deals they should because teams have to lose a pick on top of the money…that being said, i think the phillies are going to be a really good team this year and should battle with the nats for the division…they had one of the best records in the NL in the 2nd half after howard and utley came back healthy, and the bullpen (which was a disaster last year) has been sured up by adding mike adams and having stutes back healthy and philipe aumont finally coming into his own…they are being overlooked by the national media which is awesome because they are going to be scary this year…there are still a few problems with the roster, but you can make those problems easier to deal with by adding another top tier pitcher…i would love to see them sign loshe and let kendrick and lannan battle for the 5th spot…hamels, halladay, lee, loshe, kendrick/lannan would be far and away the best rotation in baseball and it would make the phillies a favorite to make the playoffs in the NL…ruben, we have this year and maybe next to make one last run with this core group…halladay most likely won’t reach his innings incentives to kick in his contract for next year, so we should be looking to add another arm anyway…get the deal done and bring another championship to philly!!

It means he might as well wait til after the draft when he isn’t tied to a draft pick than to sign a one year deal on the cheap right now. He’ll get paid more for 2013 then than if he signed now.

Basically 90 days until MLB’s amateur draft. At that point a team won’t have to give up a draft choice to sign him. I still don’t think he will get 3 years even then.

It’s just that “dirt cheap” doesn’t make sense. If you’re going to surrender a draft pick you’re going to want services for more than a year, otherwise next year you have to go out and fetch another FA for whom you might have to surrender yet another draft pick. I think the “big annual salary” is the real issue and it’s why Boras was able to get Soriano a deal by deferring a huge chunk of that money.
