I definitely agree it is a much bigger deal in other countries than it is in the states. Hence, Japan has won each of the 2 years it has been played. You also don't see Verlander, Trout, Price, Weaver, and some of the other "cream" of the United States crop because of the reasons you stated. But everyone else wants their chance to beat the U.S., because we spawned the damn sport, and we are the U.S., of course.

I will admit that I have watched a few games, and it is interesting to see the cultural differences and how they effect how the game is played in each. I was really impressed with Chinese Taipei. And also heard some interesting tidbits about how the Chinese Taipei team had associates infiltrate the Korean baseball system to be able to see exactly what's going on with the other team. You know, that thing we Americans like to call "scouting". They were caught and were forced to formally apologize!

Then you have the way the Japanese parks are set up with the bullpens pretty much in a bunker behind and underneath the dugouts. The coach has a video feed to see his pitchers that are warming up. I assume this is so the opposing manager can't see if there is a lefty or righty warming up. Changes things a bit, especially towards the end of the game.

The Japanese team are extremely good defensively and are fundementally sound players. Just throwing in my 2 pennies.

I'll say this again, I am interested, it's baseball. But they are playing at the wrong time of the year, and they still aren't sure about who is playing, or who isn't. If they played in December, or even January, and announce their final roster by November, the players would have trained themselves to get ready for the WBC, rather than use Spring Training to get ready. I just can't understand why they haven't tried to change those rules, after 3 WBC tournaments.

To me the WBC is comparable in some ways to the World Cup. People in other countries love it, take it seriously, and are passionate about it. Americans can dig it every four years, but it's not life or death, and most of us watch the matches from a very casual mindset.

Same thing here. Americans get the top professional baseball all summer, every year. So to me it makes sense for American born players, like Hamels to feel that way. What alliegance should they have to the WBC? What passion should they feel for it?

Obviously, countries that are more rooted in national pride take this competition, or any competition involving their country much more seriously. That is why I think there is a good side to the WBC, but it is just harder to see through the lense of living in America.

If the WBC wanted to cater to JUST Americans they obviously wouldn't be holding this thing during Spring Training, but rather in November/December in some hot ass, pleasant part of the world. They also would need the best players from the USA on the team, with a desire to win. Since both of those things probably won't happen, in my opinion it seems that the majority of people here won't take it seriously.

I think the problem is that MLB is the pinnacle for baseball players around the world, so anything else is just a step down. When the WBC marketing department tries to present the event at some sort of Olympic type levels of representing your country, the fact of the matter is, it's just not (yet?). For some players, specifically those whose lack of talent prevents them from reaching the pinnacle that is MLB, I'm sure this is an amazing event. They get a chance to compete against some of the best in the world and it also provides some exposure for them in the hopes that maybe someone likes what they see. I live close to L.A., so I will use a reference maybe most people won't understand. It's the equivalent of driving down to the Commerce Casino on a Friday night. Sure, most times that might be fun. But if I am going to Vegas on Saturday, why would I drive to the Commerce Casino Friday night?

That's kinda the whole point of the WBC though, to try and help popularize the sport in other countries. Baseball is already huge in America and it's quite obviously the best league in the world. Some guys, I'm sure, get into the whole
"playing for your country" thing, but I don't blame guys like Hamels who don't. The WBC isn't really for the American fans nearly as much as it is for China, Australia, Brazil, etc...
