Team USA picks Eric Hosmer to replace Mark Teixeira

Some big names were tossed around as potential World Baseball Classic replacements for the injured Mark Teixeira, but the fill-in will be Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer.

It’s hard to imagine that Hosmer was their first choice, especially following a disappointing season in which he hit just .232 with 14 homers and a .663 OPS in 152 games, but in 2011 he was very impressive as a 21-year-old rookie and before that he was an elite prospect.

Teixeira injured his forearm hitting off a tee before yesterday’s exhibition game and was immediately removed from the roster. In addition to Hosmer the other options at first base for Team USA include Joe Mauer and Ben Zobrist.

Well, from what I can tell on Twitter, he must have been ahead of Howard and Fielder because they both expressed interest in going. Unless their teams said no.

If their teams told them no, they’ll be in trouble with Bud, because that’s something teams can’t do. Of course, there are a bunch of roundabout ways employers say “yes” to employees when they really mean “we’d really rather you didn’t.” That said, I can’t imagine why the Tigers would discourage Fielder at all when Cabrera is playing for the Dominican.

That’s crazy. Fielder should have been there over Tex in the first place.

Does this move put the Royals’ quest for a Cactus League title in jeopardy?

After being luke-warm about the WBC, I’m suddenly interested.

Replacing an injured 1st baseman with a guy who OPSed .663?

Larry Lucchino calling the shots for Team USA?

Glad to see we are all in and sending our best.

Before we think about not embarrassing other country’s, let’s try and win one first.
