Who knows if he has 3 more good years ahead of him. But he sure as hell is a lot better than Lowe, and a contending team like the Rangers, with ample cash should think twice. Maybe, they consider themselves in a brief rebuilding period with the loss of Hamilton, Napoli and Young and with Profar and Olt still young and unproven, but turning to the always ready to implode Lowe is hardly the answer.

Look at the deal given to Dempster. 2 years and $26.5M

Dempster has been a quality pitcher longer than Lohse and is only 1 yr older and he had to scrounge for that deal. Lohse aimed far to high to start and teams filled holes without considering him because their were guys that were better value. When a pitcher is asking for money that requires him to repeat his best years for a team to get its money’s worth…and he is 34….most teams will just cross him off the list and move on.

Losing the pick won’t have much effect on the draft budget because the Rangers 1st round pick will sign for at least 90% of slot, probably more. In other words, it is really about losing the pick. Agents already figured out in the first year that their clients have leverage because if a team doesn’t sign him they lose all of the slot money from their draft budget. No team with a mid-to-late 1st round pick is going to be saving 500K or more to use on later picks.

Yeah, losing the pick would suck…but at least 2/3 of 1st round picks never sniff the majors….so a team is losing a chance at a good player, but only a chance.

A number of teams have already surrendered picks, so they would be giving up a later pick.

The entire reason Lohse hasn’t signed is related to his asking price/years, his age, and expected regression.

It was a fairly reasonable deal, but I don’t know how I’ll come up with a 1st round pick for compensation.
